Pam Ferris was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1948. The daughter of a Welsh police officer stationed in postwar Germany, her childhood was a constant whirl of suitcases and ships. By age thirteen she was living in New Zealand, where she began learning the craft of acting in regional theaters before returning to Europe to make her own way.
She wasn't chasing fame.
In 1991, she joined the series The Darling Buds of May. She played Ma Larkin, and British audiences fell in love with her maternal warmth and rustic energy. The show drew audiences of 18 million viewers in the United Kingdom. But Ferris did not want to be trapped forever in the role of the kind, perfect mother.
She was looking for something that would let her transform her image.
Danny DeVito cast her in Matilda in 1996. To play headmistress Agatha Trunchbull, she endured three hours of makeup sessions a day. She wore a prosthetic nose, had her eyebrows enlarged with real hair, and wore a suit that grotesquely increased her body size.
The cruelty in her gaze was real.
During the filming of the 1996 movie, she avoided any affectionate contact with the child cast members. She wanted the fear they felt when seeing her on set to be genuine, so their reactions on camera would not have to be faked.
In 2004, she once again played with audience rejection in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Her portrayal of Aunt Marge ended with her floating above the Surrey sky. It was a complex technical process in which she spent more than five hours suspended by invisible wires while the special effects team inflated her costume.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2012, she made a sharp change of pace. She donned the habit of Sister Evangelina in the series Call the Midwife. She stayed with the production for 36 episodes and decided to leave in 2016 because the filming schedule in London was too demanding.
Her departure from the series was one of the most talked-about moments in television criticism that year. The actress preferred to reclaim her private life at her home in Elham, in Kent. There she lives with her husband, actor Roger Frost, whom she married in 1986.
In 2019, she appeared in the biopic Tolkien, playing Mrs. Faulkner. She accepted the role because of the script's restraint and the chance to work in a less physical atmosphere than her previous projects.
In 2024, she voiced the character Mrs. Higgins in the animated film The Christmas Letter. Her home in the English countryside is valued at more than one million pounds, according to local property records. The contract for her most recent advertising collaboration in the UK was signed under an absolute confidentiality clause covering her fees.
