Blanca Suárez (Madrid, 1988) didn't need years of waiting in empty casting rooms. In 2007 she joined the cast of El Internado, and her face ended up in the folders of thousands of teenagers before she turned twenty. That Antena 3 series worked like a shredder for new talent, but she kept up the pace for seven straight seasons.
It was a matter of endurance.
While other peers from her generation vanished after the first big wave of fame, she sought refuge in genre cinema. In 2008, she shot Eskalofrío and quickly understood that the camera demanded more than a symmetrical smile. She preferred working with directors who demanded total physical restraint in front of the lens.
Pedro Almodóvar called her in 2011 for a supporting role in The Skin I Live In. Playing Norma, the daughter of a deranged surgeon, required her to hold her gaze against a Antonio Banderas in a state of grace. Critics at the Cannes Film Festival noticed her ability to fill the frame without long dialogue.
Then came her Goya nomination for Best New Actress.
She reunited with the director from La Mancha in 2013 for Los amantes pasajeros. On that occasion she tried her hand at ensemble comedy and a much lighter tone. On that shoot she learned that humor is a clockwork mechanism where a one-second delay ruins any joke.
In 2017, she signed a deal with Netflix to star in Las chicas del cable. It was the platform's first original production in Spain, and the project kept her busy until 2020. The workload was massive. She filmed 42 episodes that were released simultaneously in 190 countries.
But auteur cinema remained her priority outside of television sets.
Álex de la Iglesia locked her in a bar in Malasaña to shoot El bar in 2017. There she had to get covered in oil and crawl through sewers during weeks of night shoots. It was a physical, gritty job that pulled her away from the sophisticated image that luxury brands were promoting on billboards across Madrid. Her fee rose in proportion to the litres of sweat spilled on that set.
In 2020, she premiered El verano que vivimos under the direction of Carlos Sedes. The romantic drama set in the sherry cellars of Jerez performed well at the box office despite cinema capacity restrictions. The film took in more than one million euros in its first weeks in theaters.
Because the market calls the artistic shots.
In 2021, she starred in Jaguar for the same streaming platform. The series about Nazi hunters in 1960s Spain allowed her to explore a much more violent and raw side. There was no trace of the sweetness of her early days on broadcast TV.
Filming El cuarto pasajero in 2022 put her back under the direction of Álex de la Iglesia. This time the script called for a tangled comedy set inside a moving car. So she spent months trapped in a cramped space, shooting action sequences choreographed down to the millimeter.
In 2023 she released the comedy Me he hecho viral after a shoot that included international locations. During 2024 she presented the movie Disco, Ibiza, Locomía and the medical drama Breathe. In the latter production she plays Jésica Donoso, a doctor who must manage the collapse of a public hospital.
The insurance on her face for certain jewelry campaigns is worth over six hundred thousand euros a year.
