In the Madrid district of San Blas, nobody gives you anything. Hugo Silva went through vocational training to become an electrician, ran real wiring on job sites, and growled death vocals in a thrash metal band called Inordem before ever setting foot in an acting class at the RESAD.
That stint in a work jumpsuit gave him a grounding that kids coming out of modeling agencies rarely have. When he reached television at the start of the century with Al salir de clase, he already had calloused hands and a hard head.
Lucas Fernández turned his everyday life upside down.
With Paco's Men in 2005, collective frenzy took hold. For several seasons he couldn't cross the Gran Vía without a police escort, typecast as the tormented romantic hero who devoured teen magazine covers week after week.
The Spanish industry tends to burn its leading men out before they turn thirty. Silva chose to turn down lucrative television offers and take on alternative theater stages where he earned peanuts, determined to shake off the fan frenzy before the character swallowed the actor whole.
It was a risky move. For a couple of seasons the phone stopped ringing with the same enthusiasm as before, but in 2010 the wild comedy opened another door for him.
Álex de la Iglesia spotted his talent for the absurd before the auteur directors did. In 2013 he gave him a role in Witches of Zugarramurdi, dressing him as Jesus of Nazareth with a sawed-off shotgun in the middle of Puerta del Sol.
Silva discovered that laughing at his own tough-guy image was the best lifeline he could have. He shot Mi gran noche in 2015 and proved that absurd comedy suited him better than daytime drama.
Nobody expected him to pull off that kind of role.
That comedic flair opened the doors to The Ministry of Time in 2016. His Pacino, a swaggering 1970s cop in a leather jacket with neighborhood logic, came in as an emergency replacement and ended up owning the best lines of the series over four full seasons.
Long gone from the school-photo folders, directors began looking for his face for roles that demanded wear and restraint. In 2023, Isabel Coixet cast him in Un amor, the film adaptation of Sara Mesa's novel.
Piter, that intrusive, paternalistic neighbor whose every friendly remark makes you uneasy in a remote village in La Rioja, earned him in 2024 his first Goya Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor after a quarter century in the business. He never had to raise his voice once throughout the film.
In 2024 he led the cast of the crime series Marbella, directed by Dani de la Torre for Movistar Plus+, playing a criminal defense lawyer who moves through the mud of the Costa del Sol. Filming took fifteen weeks across Madrid, Málaga and Cádiz, with a budget of more than five million euros.

Things you probably didn't know about Hugo Silva
"Hollywood is a city falling apart piece by piece. My goal is to be happy and do what I enjoy, nothing more, here and in Sebastopol."
"The important thing for working in this profession is having a defined physique: being very tall, or fat... Being attractive, specifically, lets you land more insightful roles and... get girls to want to take photos with you."
"I think the American market overshadows ours and that productions depend directly on the TV networks. There are so many obstacles to making the films we want to make."
