Álvaro Cervantes didn't need years of waiting for the industry to take notice of him. In 2008, at just eighteen years old, he earned his first Goya nomination as Best New Actor for El juego del ahorcado. It was a hard landing that put him squarely on the map of Spanish auteur cinema.
But critical acclaim is one thing, and fame is another. In 2010, they took part in Three Steps Above Heaven, and their face ended up plastered across bedrooms all over Spain.
That phenomenon could have been a gilded cage.
Many actors of his generation got stuck in the young heartthrob mold, but Cervantes quickly decided to break it. In 2015 he accepted the role of Charles V in the series Carlos, Rey Emperador and had to learn to project authority in a massive period production. It was an exhausting shoot that lasted months.
And the effort paid off. The series was sold to dozens of countries and gave him the experience needed to handle projects of great technical scale. Before that shoot, he had already appeared in Brothers in 2014, where he shared the screen with Antonio de la Torre.
In 2016 he traveled to Equatorial Guinea to shoot 1898: Los últimos de Filipinas. It was a six-million-euro production in which his character served as an emotional anchor amid a lost war. There he shared scenes with Luis Tosar and Javier Gutiérrez without his nerve wavering in the slightest.
Box office responded with 1.9 million euros in its first few days.
Cervantes has managed to move between historical drama and comedy with a precision that is not usually seen. In 2021 he starred in Loco por ella under the direction of Dani de la Orden. The movie became one of the most-watched titles on the Netflix platform worldwide for weeks.
Because the actor understands that today's cinema demands a direct connection with the algorithm without losing interpretive quality. In 2022 he returned to war cinema with a fantasy twist in Malnazidos, where the production had a budget of more than three million euros to recreate a Civil War full of living dead.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024 he stepped into the shoes of Abel Velilla in Hildegart for Amazon Prime Video. It is a project that examines one of the most sensational crimes in Spanish history, and it sees the actor once again working in a meticulously researched period setting. For 2025, he has the release of El mal invisible pending.
It is a thriller shot entirely in Barcelona in which he plays a court officer. The series has eight episodes produced by The Mediapro Studio and centers on the hunt for a killer of homeless people in the city center.
