Synopsis of Criminal: Spain

A police interrogation room is the setting for Criminal: Spain. Spanish police investigators face off against suspects in a psychological cat-and-mouse game, aiming to pry out the information they need to solve their cases. The team includes Chief Inspector Joaquín Manero, Senior Inspector María de los Ángeles Toranzo and Sub-Inspector Raimundo Messeguer. Every detainee arrives with their own version of events, and the officers must decide what to believe and how hard to push without losing control of the conversation. Created by Jim Field Smith and George Kay, the series streams on Netflix and stars Emma Suárez, Álvaro Cervantes and Carmen Machi.

Trivia about Criminal: Spain

Criminal: Spain is part of a Netflix anthology of twelve episodes, with three for each of the four countries, filmed in their local languages: France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The series was shot entirely at the Ciudad de la Tele complex in Tres Cantos, Madrid, using only two adjoining interrogation rooms, with no outdoor locations.

Mariano Barroso directed and co-produced the three Spanish episodes, and also served as president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain during production.

Carmen Machi, Inma Cuesta and Eduard Fernández were announced as the leads of the three Spanish episodes before the premiere, while Emma Suárez and Álvaro Cervantes completed the main cast.

Netflix confirmed in 2020 that there would be no second season of the Spanish version, although the team had already started filming new installments of the Criminal franchise.
