Synopsis of The Mess You Leave Behind

Raquel is a literature teacher who accepts a substitute position at the high school in Novariz, a village in Galicia where her husband's family is from. She is set to take over the post of a teacher who has passed away. Her eagerness to start teaching clashes with the welcome she receives from the students. On her first day, amid the exams, she finds a note asking how long it will take her to die. To understand who is threatening a newcomer, she decides to find out who the teacher she is replacing was and what mark she left on the town. The story unfolds in a rural setting where everyone seems to know each other. Carlos Montero creates and directs the series, which airs on Netflix and offers a mystery that moves between the classroom and the community.

Trivia about The Mess You Leave Behind

The series is an adaptation of a novel by Carlos Montero published in 2016, and the author himself also takes charge of the screen adaptation and directing.

Most of the filming took place in Celanova, a town of just over 5500 residents. There, the IES de Celanova, where key scenes are shot, is part of the San Salvador monastery, founded by San Rosendo.

Filming stretched into mid-March 2020 in locations including Betanzos, Cambre, Oleiros, A Coruña, Celanova, Ribadavia, Bande and the Sil canyons.

More than 85% of the film crew was of Galician origin, according to data published during the series' promotion.

The series entered Netflix's global top 10 within days of its release and hit No. 1 in Portugal, Uruguay, Austria and Greece, as well as No. 8 in the United States.

Roque Ruiz and Isabel Garrido made their acting debuts in the series, alongside Galician actors such as Xosé Antonio Touriñán, Susana Dans and Alfonso Agra.

The production was made by Vaca Films and was promoted as Netflix's first Galician series.
