In 2005, Inma Cuesta was standing in line at a massive casting call in Madrid with not a penny to her name and a suitcase full of doubts. Nacho Cano listened to her hit a note and gave her the lead role of María in Hoy no me puedo levantar. There was no trickery and no prior connections on her record. She came from Arquillos, a town in Jaén with barely two thousand residents, where her father worked as an upholsterer and dramatic culture was a distant mirage.
Those three-hour daily shows wrecked her voice but toughened her stage presence. The stage taught her to project emotion without holding back, a technique she carried almost immediately to television when she joined the daily soap Amar en tiempos revueltos. The routine of shooting dozens of pages a day sharpened her discipline in front of the camera.
Nobody survives that pace by chance.
In 2009, she began shooting Red Eagle, and its massive audience put her tragic expression on screen for several seasons. But the actress wanted to get her hands dirty with cinematic mud and took on the challenge of La voz dormida in 2011 with Benito Zambrano. That shoot, about postwar prison repression, demanded a crushing physical commitment. Her role as Hortensia earned her first Goya Award nomination thanks to a restraint that avoided tearjerking melodrama.
Many directors then assumed her range belonged only to rural tragedy or civil anguish. So it was a huge surprise when Javier Ruiz Caldera handed her the script for 3 Bodas de más in 2013. As Ruth, a clumsy, heavy-drinking university researcher who attends the wedding of three exes, she grossed more than six million euros at the box office and revealed a sharp comic streak that caught critics off guard.
And in 2015, Paula Ortiz cast her opposite the verses of Federico García Lorca in The Bride. The project adapted Blood Wedding with a stark, violent aesthetic shot in the deserts of Los Monegros and Turkey. Critics backed her performance with the Feroz Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and it also marked her third nomination at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain awards.
That film confirmed her refusal to settle into a single tone.
In 2018, Paco León and Anna R. Costa offered her the role of Ana Mari in Madrid on Fire. Shot entirely in black and white, the fiction portrayed the dolce vita of Ava Gardner in Franco-era Madrid through the eyes of a lame, puritanical, illiterate maid. Cuesta built the character through physical stiffness and an unsettling dryness, earning her a second Feroz Award after stripping away any trace of easy sympathy.
That same year, she shared the screen with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz in Everybody Knows, directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. The demands of rehearsing nonstop with international directors tested her ability to react to unexpected cues. So when Carlos Montero called her in 2020 to star in the series The Mess You Leave Behind in the damp forests of Galicia, the actress took on the psychological weight of a suffocating thriller, with shooting days under torrential rain.
In 2023, she made three feature films in radically different genres. She moved from the ensemble comedy of Los buenos modales and El favor to the police action of All the Names of God, directed by Daniel Calparsoro alongside Luis Tosar. The actress refused to stall in waiting for offers and made a decisive move.
Tired of waiting for offers, she launched a company of her own.
In 2023, she founded the production company Loba Loba with screenwriter Ángeles Maeso to finance and develop her own audiovisual projects. In 2025, she wrapped shooting on the black comedy Un funeral de locos under Manuel Gómez Pereira and began the final writing phase of a comedy feature centered on the LGBTIQ+ community. The production closed its budget with an independent financing structure and a seven-week shooting schedule in Andalusia.
