Álvaro Antonio García decided his stage name needed to sound more powerful, so they chose the surname of a close friend. Before entering homes across half the planet wearing tortoiseshell glasses, they spent years grinding away in theater and in supporting roles nobody remembers.
In 2011 he received a cancer diagnosis in his left thigh that threatened to force the amputation of his leg. Doctors gave him very low survival odds, but he decided it was just a bump in the script. That personal crisis gave him a strange calm in front of the camera.
After believing you're going to die, an audition for a daily series doesn't seem that important. Doctors spoke of a 90-day life expectancy if the treatment didn't work.
And he pulled through.
In 2014 he joined the cast of El secreto de Puente Viejo, where he shot more than 500 episodes. It was his definitive training in memorizing lines and technical speed. But his ambition was never fame; it was precision in his craft.
When the chance to play in Money Heist came in 2017, the actor proposed that his character have specific tics. The gesture of adjusting his glasses wasn't in the original script. It was his contribution, giving shyness to a criminal planning the biggest heist in history.
To land the role, they had to get through five auditions over months of uncertainty. The producers were looking for someone who didn't look like a conventional TV heartthrob. They understood that the Professor's charisma lay in his social awkwardness and his almost pathological intelligence.
The show's success in 2018 after its move to Netflix changed the game for Spanish fiction abroad. Morte didn't let the buzz from fans in Brazil or Saudi Arabia distract him from his main goal.
He kept rehearsing with his own company, 300 Pistolas.
In 2012, they founded that theater company to revive the spirit of the traveling companies of Spain's Golden Age. So while the world saw them as a global idol, they remained focused on the meter of Lope de Vega's verses on small stages.
In 2021, they joined the fantasy universe of The Wheel of Time for Amazon Prime Video. Playing Logain Ablar required them to work with heavy visual effects and a level of post-production that demands an acting technique very different from Spanish realism.
A year later, in 2022, they starred in Limitless, playing Juan Sebastián Elcano. It was a large-scale production that told the story of the first circumnavigation of the globe. Filming included locations in the Dominican Republic and the use of full-size replicas of historic ships.
In 2024, they shot Immaculate in Italy. In this horror film, they play Father Sal Tedeschi and share the screen with Sydney Sweeney. It's their first major genre project in Hollywood, performed entirely in English with a dark register.
The film's estimated budget was $9 million.
The film used Arri Alexa 35 cameras to achieve an image texture similar to the horror cinema of the 1970s.
