In 1995, Omar Chaparro was delivering pizzas in Chihuahua and training for national karate championships while looking for airtime on any local microphone. He soon realized commercial radio was too small for him. His move to the Telehit channel in the late nineties defined the kind of TV clown he would play throughout the following decade: a hyperactive impersonator ready to throw himself on the floor for an easy laugh.
Nobody in the industry expected a mass phenomenon.
In 2003, he won the second season of Big Brother VIP with unprecedented public support, and the Televisa network gave him the prime-time slot for the late-night show No manches. The program mixed physical sketches with wild interviews and street challenges. It worked because its frantic pace covered up the seams of a script that barely existed.
His move into film came through international animation. In 2008, he voiced Po the panda in the Latin American Spanish version of Kung Fu Panda, a dubbing role he repeated in every sequel in the DreamWorks franchise. The martial discipline he learned as a young man helped him build the character's personality around pure physical energy.
The big financial breakthrough came through Spanish director Nacho G. Velilla. In 2016, he co-starred in No manches, Frida alongside Martha Higareda, a school comedy aimed at the Latino market on both sides of the Rio Grande. The film and its 2019 sequel grossed more than 630 million pesos in Mexican theaters, a figure that exceeded the expectations of distributor Pantelion Films.
Los Angeles production companies also began courting him for quick-turnaround projects in the United States. He made brief appearances in Show Dogs in 2018 and a supporting role as a coach in Pokémon Detective Pikachu in 2019, alongside Ryan Reynolds. Chaparro realized that in Hollywood his image fit well as a comic relief with athletic credibility.
Audiences filled the movie theaters without asking for subtlety.
But that commercial momentum threatened to swallow the actor. In 2019, he produced and starred in the Netflix film Como caído del cielo, playing an impersonator haunted by the ghost of Pedro Infante. Mexican critics harshly criticized the movie for tampering with an untouchable icon of the golden age. So the comedian decided to change direction before exhausting the formula of the perpetual gag.
To break free from his TV clown persona, he had to transform his body dramatically. In the independent drama Un viaje al corazón: The Wingwalker, directed by Alonso Álvarez-Barreda and premiered at festivals in 2024, he gained nearly twenty kilos to play a widowed father facing deportation who plans to cross the border into the United States to save his sick daughter. Chaparro shot scenes in Tijuana prisons without using stunt doubles and cut every comedic tic from his gestural repertoire.
The border story demanded a harshness that his earlier comedies never attempted. The film opened the Guadalajara International Film Festival in June 2024, before its commercial release in North America. That shift in tone pushed casting directors to consider him for weightier dramatic roles.
That shift also paved the way for his entry into the Spanish film market. In 2024, he shot the comedy Cuerpo escombro in various locations in Bilbao, directed by Curro Velázquez and co-starring Dani Rovira and Cassandra Ciangherotti.
No stunt doubles were used during filming.
In 2026, he signed on to star in the action film Taken, with a budget of four million dollars and a 28-day continuous shoot in the state of Nuevo León.
