Jaime Camil was born in Mexico City in 1973 under the shadow of a surname tied to high finance. His father expected a successor to run his businesses, but young Jaime preferred to study business administration just to meet the requirements while training in theater in New York.
It was a risky decision.
In 1999, he released his first album and soon after entered the world of Mexican telenovelas. The industry quickly typecast him as the go-to leading man (a label that's hard to shake in Latin America) until 2006, when he starred in La fea más bella. The show reached screen ratings above 60% in its home country and gave him bargaining power that few actors had at the time.
Many actors stay in the comfort zone of Televisa's million-dollar paychecks. But Camil decided to move to Los Angeles when he was already a Spanish-language star, to try his luck at auditions where nobody knew how to pronounce his name. And the gamble paid off in an unexpected way.
In 2014, he landed the role of Rogelio de la Vega in the series Jane the Virgin. What was on paper a parody of a telenovela actor became the comedic heart of the show over five seasons. He won two Critics Choice Awards for this work and got the American specialist press to stop seeing him as an imported product.
American audiences embraced him right away.
That success opened the doors of Broadway for him in 2016, where he played Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago. It wasn't his first time on stage (he had already performed in London's West End years earlier), but this time he had the backing of New York critics.
In 2022, he took on the most complex challenge of his filmography, playing Vicente Fernández in the biographical series El Rey. The Netflix and Caracol Televisión production demanded a physical and vocal transformation that set him apart from his usual characters. Playing a national idol in Mexico can be a career suicide if the performance falls short.
The series was filmed in more than 380 locations, and Camil had to record his own versions of the theme songs for El Charro de Huentitán. The result was one of the most-watched Spanish-language productions worldwide that year.
But the actor didn't stop at biographical drama. In 2024, he joined the sitcom Lopez vs Lopez on NBC to revisit his lighter side. And in 2025, he signed on as host of the American version of the reality show The Traitors for the Peacock platform.
The contract for this latest project includes an executive producer clause, and filming was centered at a castle in the Scottish Highlands.
