Eva Longoria arrived in Los Angeles in the late nineties with a kinesiology degree under her arm and barely enough money for a shared apartment. She took part in local talent contests and landed small roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 or General Hospital. Nothing suggested that the young woman from Texas would one day lead one of the most profitable productions in global television.
In 2004 she stepped into the role of Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives. The ABC series averaged 23 million viewers in its first season. Longoria went from being an unknown to earning 400,000 dollars per episode by the end of the show in 2012. That was when she decided she didn't want to depend on an agent calling her on the phone.
The industry didn't expect a comedy actress to be able to read a balance sheet.
She founded her own production company, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, in 2005. She didn't do it for a fancy office (a place to hang photos) but to control the content being made in Hollywood. The road was slow, however. She produced Devious Maids in 2013 and realized that the American market systematically ignored Latino audiences despite their buying power.
Many actors move into directing as an ego exercise. Longoria did it for pure technical logistics. She started by directing episodes of series such as Jane the Virgin and Black-ish to learn how each department on a set works. She wanted to understand lenses, catering budgets and post-production timelines before asking for financing for a feature film.
In 2023, she made her feature directorial debut with Flamin' Hot. The film tells the story of the janitor who supposedly invented the famous spicy Cheetos snacks. It was a risky bet. Disney decided to release it simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ to maximize its reach. And the gamble paid off.
But money doesn't always buy prestige.
Longoria has maintained a very high commercial profile for decades. She has been the face of cosmetics brands and has invested in soccer teams and restaurants. So her return to dramatic acting in 2024 with the series Land of Women marked a necessary change of pace. In this Apple TV+ production, she plays a woman who flees New York for a village in Spain because of her husband's financial troubles.
The actress never hid her lack of fluency in Spanish during her early years of fame. She learned it as an adult out of respect for her roots and for business strategy. In 2023, she hosted the documentary Searching for Mexico on CNN. It was a food series exploring the culture of her ancestors' country. She did it without academic pretensions, focusing on the economic impact of local cuisine.
Her political influence in the United States is real. She raises millions of dollars for election campaigns and founded the Latino Victory Fund to back Hispanic candidates. Still, she prefers to talk about her production numbers. In 2024, her company managed more than ten active projects across film and television.
Filming for Land of Women took place entirely on location in Catalonia, with a crew made up of 70% local professionals.
