From the Lab to the Stage

Amaury Nolasco never wanted to be an actor. He was studying biology at the University of Puerto Rico, and his future seemed to lie in a doctor's office or a chemical analysis lab. But a director spotted him on a beach and offered him a commercial. That chance shoot abruptly derailed his academic plans.

Puerto Rico quickly felt too small for him.

In 1995 he landed in New York with more ambition than connections. He enrolled at the American British Dramatic Academy and began picking up tiny roles on shows such as CSI and ER. Those were the years of paying bills with characters who had a single line (sometimes even less) while he waited for a real break in casting directors' offices.

New York doesn't give anything away to newcomers.

In the early 2000s, his face started to look familiar on American television. He appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003, playing Orange Julius. That big-budget action film gave him an inside look at how the Hollywood machine worked. But his real breakout was still ahead, in a fictional prison in Illinois.

Fox River Cell

Casting for Prison Break in 2005 changed his bank account overnight. His role as Fernando Sucre wasn't the lead, but he became the heart of the series over its four original seasons. Nolasco shot 79 episodes of a show that was sold in more than a hundred countries and created a fan frenzy that was hard to handle for a guy with a science background.

And the gamble paid off.

Michael Bay cast him in Transformers in 2007. He played Soldier Figueroa in a production with a budget of $150 million. It was his definitive entry into the world of major Los Angeles studios. From then on, he alternated pure action films with TV projects that aimed to recreate the success of his prison days.

In 2008 he worked on Street Kings alongside Keanu Reeves, and that same year he stepped into the role of Jack Lupino in the video game adaptation Max Payne. Critics were not kind to the movie, but box office returns were enough to keep his name on lists of bankable actors. Nolasco learned early that in this industry, press opinion matters less than opening-weekend numbers.

Production and Maturity on Set

Her return to the Prison Break universe in 2017 for a special fifth season confirmed that audiences had not forgotten him. But he was already chasing other goals. In 2020 he joined the cast of Hightown to play Frankie Cuevas. The Starz series ran until 2024 and let him move away from the friendly image of his early career to explore darker roles.

He signed executive producing deals to diversify his income beyond straight acting. He knows that longevity in film depends on having one foot in the office and the other on set. That's why he got involved in projects that let him better control shooting schedules and the choice of his co-stars.

In 2022, he took part in the comedy The Valet for Hulu. It was a necessary change of pace after years of crime dramas and shoot-em-up movies. But action soon came knocking at his door again.

In 2024 he took part in The Killer's Game alongside Dave Bautista. The production had an estimated budget of $30 million and was shot mainly on location in Budapest under the direction of J.J. Perry.
