In 2013, the American film industry watched in disbelief as the box office numbers of an unexpected title rose. No Refunds grossed 44 million dollars in the United States on a budget of just five. That financial phenomenon put Eugenio Derbez permanently on the radar of the major studios in Los Angeles.
That was the exact moment he stopped being a local Mexican phenomenon and became a key figure in the global Latino market. The actor understood that Hispanic audiences in North America wanted their own stories, which didn't always fit the industry's traditional molds. And the plan was no accident.
The son of actress Silvia Derbez and advertising executive Eugenio González Salas, the performer grew up between television sets and advertising agencies. His training at Televisa's Center for Artistic Education gave him a command of physical comedy and screenwriting before he turned thirty. During the 1990s, he created shows such as Al derecho y al derbez, where he established a style of humor built on wordplay and exaggerated characters.
That period defined his personal brand across Latin America.
After his massive success in his home country, he moved to California in 2014 to found his own production company, 3Pas Studios. The early road was difficult, however, because in Hollywood nobody knew his previous career in Spanish-language television. He turned down supporting roles that perpetuated stereotypes in order to focus on projects where he had full creative control.
In 2017, he premiered How to Be a Latin Lover, and the numbers once again proved him right, surpassing 60 million dollars in box office earnings. The strategy was to produce family comedies with one foot in each culture, switching naturally between English and Spanish. That's how his name became a guarantee of profitability for distributors such as Lionsgate and Pantelion Films.
In 2018, he took part in the new version of Overboard, a film that confirmed his ability to lead international casts. His approach has always prioritized connecting with audiences over blind approval from specialized critics.
The success of CODA at the 2022 Academy Awards marked a fundamental shift in his professional career. He played Bernardo Villalobos, a music teacher who moved away from the caricatures typical of his earlier television work. It was a restrained performance that earned him a kind of prestige that pure comedy often denies.
It was a risky bet.
In 2023, he starred in Radical, an educational drama based on real events in which he played a teacher in a marginalized area of Matamoros. The film won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and showed that his name could draw mass audiences to socially driven stories. The production was shot entirely in Mexico with a local crew.
His public image management also includes the documentary series Life on the Road with the Derbez Family, which began in 2019 and explores his family's dynamics across different countries. The show has helped expand his presence on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 territories. His contract with Univision signed in 2021 secures exclusive rights to much of his past and future catalog.
