After months of bloody fighting, the trenches of the Spanish Civil War are piling up with thousands of dead. Jan Lozano, captain of the Fifth Brigade, is about to be executed by firing squad. His only chance to escape the sentence is to accept a mission that seems impossible: cross enemy territory and complete it. For him, there is no alternative, and every step toward enemy territory weighs on him from the very first moment. The captain has no room to refuse, and the mission becomes the only thing separating him from the firing squad. Directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro, the film stars Miki Esparbé and Aura Garrido.

Trivia about Valley of the Dead

The film is an adaptation of the novel "Noche de difuntos del 38" by Manuel Martín Ferreras.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the release in theaters to be postponed and led to the shelving of all pending Telecinco Cinema titles.

In its international version, the film is titled "Valley of the Dead," while its original Spanish title is "Valley of the Dead."

The screenplay is written by three authors: Jaime Marqués Olarreaga, Alberto Fernández Arregui and Cristian Conti.

Filming took place mainly at night, and María Botto described the cast's teamwork as building a "puzzle" because of the challenge of coordinating so many characters.

The film opened the 2020 Sitges Film Festival, ahead of its commercial release in Spanish theaters.

In Spanish theaters it grossed around one million euros, but it later reached No. 1 on Netflix Spain and third place worldwide among the platform's most-watched movies.

"Valley of the Dead" received 22 nominations at the Goya Awards, including Best Film, Production Design, Original Score and Acting categories.
