Trivia about Smiley

Minoria Absoluta asked Netflix to produce the series entirely in Catalan, which would have made it the platform's first show made in that language. In the end, it was spoken in Spanish and Catalan.

The series was filmed in Spanish, although the subplot involving Eduardo Lloveras and Ruth Llopis is in Catalan. The actors dubbed their own voices for the Catalan version.

In April 2023, Clua confirmed that there would be no second season of the series.

Ramón Pujol, who plays Ramón in the series, had already played Bruno in the first stage productions of «Smiley». Guillem Clua took advantage of his addition to broaden the range of ages and sexual orientations in the cast.

Filming began in May 2022 in Barcelona, with Marta Pahissa and David M. Porras directing, after the casting of Carlos Cuevas and Miki Esparbé as the leads was confirmed.

The production recreated a location from the original play for the series at the Escuela Industrial de Barcelona, where a scene was shot in the building on Rosselló Street, number 101.

«Smiley» received a nomination at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Spanish-Language Scripted Series, and another at the 2023 Queerty Awards for Best TV Comedy.
