María Valverde won a Goya before she was old enough to drive.
She appeared in La flaqueza del bolchevique in 2003 after a casting call that drew three thousand hopefuls. She was sixteen years old and had no prior training at acting schools. Manuel Martín Cuenca was looking for a raw gaze, and she delivered a presence that overflowed the screen with barely any technical effort.
That early victory is often a trap for young actors, but Valverde avoided the broken-toy stigma with a coolness unusual for her age. She decided her place was on the fringes of auteur cinema and steered clear of easy, conventional teen roles.
That shoot changed his view of the craft.
In 2010, Spanish box office exploded with A tres metros sobre el cielo. That adaptation of Federico Moccia's novel catapulted her into an aggressive kind of fame she had never sought. Paparazzi began following her around Madrid, and her face plastered the folders of half of Spain.
But fame never managed to consume her artistic aspirations.
She went on to make projects such as Madrid, 1987 in 2011, where she shared a dialectical and physical confinement with José Sacristán. That David Trueba film worked as the perfect antidote to mass-market commercial cinema. She filmed almost the entire movie nude, showing that control over her own body was her greatest political tool in an industry that tends to objectify young actresses.
The industry stopped seeing her as a promising newcomer.
She crossed the pond in 2014 to take part in Exodus: Gods and Kings under the direction of Ridley Scott. She played Séfora and shared scenes with Christian Bale. It was her first major Hollywood production and the start of a period of professional nomadism that took her to live in London and finally in California.
And the change wasn't just geographic.
In 2017, she married orchestra conductor Gustavo Dudamel. This union took her firmly out of the spotlight of the most traditional Spanish gossip press and focused her energy on global projects. In 2021, she starred in Distancia de rescate for a streaming platform, where Claudia Llosa directed her in a psychological horror story filmed in Chile.
In 2024, her role in the war drama The Last Front solidified her presence in the English-speaking market. The shoot took place on location in Belgium and had a budget of fifteen million euros. The film had its commercial release in the United States in August of that same year.
