Mélanie Laurent wasn't looking to become an actress when she tagged along with a friend to the set of Asterix & Obelix: God Save Me! in 1998. There she crossed paths with Gérard Depardieu, and the encounter unexpectedly changed the course of her career. The actor asked her if she wanted to work in film and gave her advice she followed with military discipline. He forbade her from setting foot in an acting school because he believed her natural instinct was enough.
Film was not in her plans.
She debuted in 1999 with a small role in Un pont entre deux rives, directed by Depardieu himself. But her name began to make real waves in the French industry thanks to Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas in 2006. Her performance as a depressed young woman earned her the César Award for Most Promising Actress and put her on the radar of major international directors.
Before turning twenty-five, she had already proven that her on-screen presence didn't rely on artifice. Her gaze projected an unusual maturity for her age. Laurent has always preferred silences charged with tension to the explanatory dialogue that fills commercial cinema.
In 2009, Quentin Tarantino was searching for a French actress to play Shosanna Dreyfus in Inglourious Basterds. The audition was an intense process in which Laurent had to prove she could carry the weight of a historical revenge. Her face in front of the movie projector became the most powerful image in the film and definitively opened the doors of the Anglo-American market to her.
And the gamble paid off.
But acting wasn't enough to satisfy her creative restlessness. In 2011, she decided to step behind the camera with her first feature film, Les Adoptés. This transition was not a star's whim but a need to control the story from its origin. So she began juggling Hollywood shoots with far more intimate personal projects in Europe.
In 2014, she directed Respire, and the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to excellent critical reception. The story explored the limits of toxic friendship among teenagers with a rawness that surprised analysts. Laurent proved that her directing touch was dry, direct and free of cheap sentimentality.
Her career in the United States continued with titles such as Now You See Me in 2013 and Beginners in 2010. In the latter, she shared the screen with Christopher Plummer in a story that explored family ties and grief. But she kept looking for projects where she could have full control over production and the screenplay.
Then came the challenge of literature.
In 2021, she adapted the novel Le Bal des folles for the screen. The film depicted the confinement of women at the Salpêtrière hospital in the late 19th century under hysteria diagnoses. Laurent not only directed the film but also played one of the nurses to ensure the tone stayed true to her original vision.
In 2023, she premiered the film Voleuses on a streaming platform. On this project, she once again took on the dual role of director and lead actress in an action plot that broke with her more dramatic previous work. The shoot took place in various locations across France and required large-scale technical planning for the risky sequences.
In 2024, production wrapped on Libre for Prime Video with an estimated budget of 15 million euros.
