Karin Viard doesn't have the porcelain face that French cinema usually demands from its heroines. She was born in Rouen in 1966 and was raised by her grandparents because her parents preferred living on oil rigs to a family living room.
She arrived in Paris at seventeen with the urgency of someone with no Plan B.
She enrolled in Jean-Laurent Cochet's acting course and started working on whatever came her way. Because Viard has never been one to wait by the phone.
She survived by handing out hamburgers.
In 1990, she landed a tiny role in Tati Danielle. It wasn't a media sensation, but it got Paris casting directors to stop seeing her as just another extra and to note her name for more significant projects.
Most of her generation's actresses went for mystery or distance. Viard always preferred physical truth, even when that meant coming across as unlikable or excessive on camera.
In 1993, she shot La Nage indienne. The film earned her a César nomination for Most Promising Actress and confirmed that her strength lay in comedy with a bitter undertone.
And then cancer came.
Not her own, but her character's, in Haut les cœurs ! in 1999. Director Sólveig Anspach asked her to shave her head and face the abyss of illness without any aesthetic protection.
She won the César for Best Actress, and the industry stopped seeing her as a useful supporting actress and started handing her the keys to major projects.
During the 2000s, her work pace became almost industrial. She shot three or four films a year without breaking a sweat.
She appeared in Le Rôle de sa vie in 2004 and in the brutal Polisse in 2011. In the latter, she played a juvenile squad cop with a coldness that could chill the blood.
But the general public mostly identifies her with La Famille Bélier from 2014. She played a deaf mother in a register that walked the line of farce without ever falling over it.
She sold more than seven million movie tickets in France alone.
In 2019, she switched gears to play a deadly nanny in Chanson douce. It was a work of technical precision, stripped of any trace of humanity and focused on the gaze.
In 2024, she premiered Madame de Sévigné. In this period film, she plays the marquise with a mix of aristocratic haughtiness and maternal obsession that breaks away from the genre's usual corsets.
That same year, she took part in the shoot of Maria directed by Jessica Palud. She is the French actress with the most nominations for the César Awards of her generation.
She has thirteen nominations in total.
