A quirky family, a sense of unity

Paula Bélier is 16 years old and lives on a farm in Mayenne with her parents and her brother, all of whom are deaf. She is the family's interpreter for almost everything: she answers phone calls, talks to the bank, and accompanies her parents to the doctor's office so they understand what they are being told. She also helps maintain the farm, so her daily life revolves around everyone else's needs. While she rehearses Michel Sardou songs with her choir, her music teacher encourages her to audition for the Maîtrise de Radio France, an opportunity that could give her a career and a degree. The film is directed by Éric Lartigau.

In theaters, The Bélier Family drew 7,450,944 viewers and placed second at the French box office for 2014.

For the shoot, Louane Emera did athletic training to control their breathing and learn to project their voice and words.

The film earned six nominations at the 40th César Awards, and Louane Emera won the award for Best Actress Revelation.

At its Japanese premiere, the film's main theme was "Seishun no Tsubasa," performed by Maco.

Éric Lartigau discovered Louane Emera after a friend recommended he watch them on "The Voice"; the director said their performance brought a smile and tears to his eyes before he brought them onto the project.

The cast spent between four and five months preparing, with four hours a day of French Sign Language lessons alongside deaf teachers.

The film drew criticism from deaf journalist Rebecca Atkinson for casting mainly hearing actors, although Luca Gelberg and Bruno Gomila are deaf and took part in the cast.
