A horse threw him to the ground in 1991, and France gained a prestigious director. Guillaume Canet wanted to be a professional show jumper, but a serious fall at eighteen broke both his dream and his back. Without that hard blow into the mud, one of the most influential figures in contemporary European cinema would not exist.
He studied acting at the Cours Florent in Paris almost by accident. In 1994, he made his debut in the short film Fils unique and soon became the go-to face for directors seeking a mix of vulnerability and energy. But standing in front of the camera was never enough for him.
And then he decided to take control.
In 2002, he directed his first feature film, Mon idole. It was a biting satire about the television world that surprised the industry with its technical maturity. Canet did not want to be just a handsome actor with ambitions, but an author capable of managing complex budgets and crews.
His breakthrough came in 2006 with Tell No One. This adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel won him the César for Best Director in 2007. The film grossed over €17 million in France alone and immediately opened the doors of the international market to him.
There was no turning back.
That success allowed him to shoot Les Petits Mouchoirs in 2010. It was a generational drama with an ensemble cast that included Marion Cotillard and François Cluzet. The film sold more than five million tickets in French cinemas and became a lasting portrait of the contradictions of the modern bourgeoisie.
But his career has not been a straight path of easy triumphs. In 2013, he tried to conquer Hollywood by directing Blood Ties on a budget of $25 million. The result was a financial stumble that led him back to more personal projects, less dependent on the American studio machine.
The French industry stopped seeing him as a leading man and began treating him as a serious author.
In 2017, he released Rock’n Roll. It was a comedy in which he parodied himself and his relationship with Marion Cotillard, poking fun at the obsession with youth in film. Three years later, he brought back his signature characters in Nous finirons ensemble to close the cycle that began a decade earlier.
In 2023, he took the biggest risk of his career by directing and starring in Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom. It was a massive production with a budget of €65 million. Although French critics were relentless about the screenplay, the film managed to draw millions of moviegoers in international markets such as China and Eastern Europe.
That same year, he shot Acide under the direction of Just Philippot. In it, he played a desperate father in the middle of a climate catastrophe (destructive acid rain). He also starred in Hors-saison by Stéphane Brizé, exploring the melancholy of an actor in crisis at a deserted spa resort.
In 2024, he acted in L’Amour ouf directed by Gilles Lellouche. The production had an estimated budget of 32 million euros and was presented in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. The filmmaker still lives in Normandy, where he remains involved in breeding competition horses.
