Charlotte Le Bon spent eight years in front of a camera hating every second of the job. In Montreal and New York she learned that modeling was a fast way to make money but a slow way to lose her mind. So she dropped everything for an opportunity in French television that nearly typecast her for good.
In 2010, she landed at Canal+ as the new weather girl on Le Grand Journal. She didn't just read isobars. She wrote her own comedy sketches and dressed up as absurd characters to mock the legacy of the decorative TV hostess. That gave her instant and dangerous fame in France.
Nobody took her seriously as a dramatic actress.
But her training in fine arts and her family legacy (daughter and granddaughter of actors) carried more weight than live comedy bits. In 2012, she made her film debut in Asterix & Obelix: God Save Britannia. It was a small role in a loud blockbuster that paid the bills while she searched for her own voice, away from the TV spotlight.
The drawing was her emergency exit.
She exhibited her work in galleries in Paris and kept illustrating because she needed a sense of control that film denied her. That need for control eventually pushed her behind the camera years later.
In 2014, she shot The Hundred-Foot Journey under the direction of Lasse Hallström. Sharing the bill with Helen Mirren and catching the attention of Steven Spielberg opened the doors of Los Angeles agencies to her. During that period, she took on very different projects to keep the industry from typecasting her as the eternal French supporting actress.
She shot her first short film on 16mm in 2018.
She appeared in The Walk in 2015 alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and later in La promesa in 2016. These were big-budget films that gave her a firsthand look at how a film set is run. But studio cinema never quite fit her dark, somewhat melancholic sensibility.
She hated being called a muse.
For her, cinema was never about physical presence but about atmosphere. In 2019, she began shaping her most personal project by adapting a graphic novel by Bastien Vivès. She stepped away from commercial acting to focus on a ghost story about teenagers at the lakes of Quebec.
In 2022, she premiered Falcon Lake at the Cannes Film Festival. Her feature directorial debut surprised critics, who still remembered her for her TV sketches. The film avoided cheap scares and focused instead on sexual awakening and the fear of the unseen.
She shot on 16mm film to achieve an organic texture that evoked the summers of her childhood. Her shift from actress to filmmaker was completed with a resounding success on the international festival circuit. In 2023, the French Academy awarded her the César Award for Best First Feature Film.
The production of her second feature film has a budget of five million euros.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Niki, directed by Céline Sallette. She balances these on-screen roles with writing her next original screenplay in Montreal. Filming for her new movie is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025.
