Richard is a young American who arrives in Thailand eager to experience something radically different from his former life. In Bangkok he stays at a modest hostel on Khao San Road, where he meets a French couple, Françoise and Étienne, and soon becomes attracted to her. There he also crosses paths with Daffy, an unstable Scottish traveler who tells him about an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand, with a hidden, nearly untouched beach. According to Daffy, he has been living there in secret for years. Richard begins to wonder whether this place is the paradise he's looking for, although many consider it a myth. The film is directed by Danny Boyle and stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

Trivia about The Beach

Ewan McGregor, a frequent Boyle collaborator, believed he would get the lead role, but he was ultimately not chosen. The decision caused a rift between the two.

Hélène de Fougerolles auditioned in 1999, but the casting directors told her she wasn't mysterious enough for the character. Her lines were eventually cut from the final edit and only appear in the DVD extras.

During filming, a long-tail boat carrying crew and cast members capsized. The incident was reported to involve Boyle and DiCaprio, although no one was injured.

DiCaprio earned 20 million dollars for the film, after signing in July 1998 following months of deliberation.

The track "Snakeblood" by Leftfield, included on the soundtrack, was accused of sampling "Almost" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark without permission, which led to a lawsuit.

Liam Howlett of The Prodigy asked Alex Garland to write a song for the film together with Robert Del Naja. The result, "No Souvenirs," was not used in the movie.

The surge in tourism after the release caused environmental damage to the bay and nearby reefs, and Thai authorities closed the beach in 2018.

The production faced environmental protests during filming on Ko Phi Phi Le and a lawsuit against Fox that dragged on for years; the film grossed more than 140 million dollars worldwide.

Quotes by The Beach

Richard, this is just the kind of pretentious bullshit that Americans always say to French girls so they can sleep with them.
No offence an' all, but, you're fucked in the head, right?
Now get some sleep, I may wish to have sex again before we eat breakfast.
And me, I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for, 'cause it's not where you go. It's how you feel for a moment in your life when you're a part of something, and if you find that moment... it lasts forever...
I had nothing left to offer but pure reflex. Pure reflex and mankind's basic drive for survival, that somehow shouts, "NO - I WILL NOT DIE TODAY!"
The only downer is, everyone's got the same idea. We all travel thousands of miles just to watch TV and check in to somewhere with all the comforts of home, and you gotta ask yourself, what is the point of that?
