Ana Polvorosa was seventeen years old when she slipped into the loud, colorful tights of Lorena García. By 2005, nobody in the Telecinco offices imagined that this redhead from Getafe would go on to steal every comedic scene of Aída. As a child, she had cut her teeth in fiction such as Raquel busca su sitio and Javier ya no vive solo, but the whirlwind of the Esperanza Sur neighborhood threatened to consume the actress before she turned twenty.
And typecasting seemed unavoidable. For nearly two hundred episodes, she carried the weight of a flashy character who shouted more than he spoke and even got an absurd song onto the sales charts.
She said enough was enough and walked away.
In 2012, she made the riskiest decision any actor can make in Spanish television. She turned down a guaranteed contract in prime time to lock herself away in alternative theater venues and workshops with masters such as Andrés Lima and Fernando Piernas. She wanted to escape the cliché before it was too late.
Her artistic partnership with Eduardo Casanova shattered any comfort zone. In 2015 they shot the short film Eat My Shit, and two years later they brought the project to theaters with Pieles. Polvorosa agreed to endure marathon makeup sessions to wear a facial prosthesis that simulated an anus in place of a mouth.
Nobody recognized her face beneath the latex.
The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017, drawing walkouts from the audience and applause from specialized critics. But for her, it was a way to abruptly break the comedic momentum of mass-market television. Going from family comedy sets to eating pureed food on camera demands an unusual level of acting resolve.
That same 2017, she joined the first Spanish production financed by Netflix. In Cable Girls, she defended the identity of Sara Millán for 42 episodes, a woman transitioning to her true self as Óscar in the 1930s. That role earned her the Unión de Actores award in 2018 after four consecutive seasons in the main cast.
In 2021, Alejandro Amenábar was cast as co-lead in the miniseries La Fortuna alongside Álvaro Mel. The production screened in the Official Selection of the San Sebastián Film Festival and earned a nomination for the Feroz Awards for Best Lead Actress in a TV Series.
So the shift toward restrained suspense was irreversible. She went on to star in the thriller Tú también lo harías in 2023 and the adaptation of La última noche en Tremor in 2024, directed by Oriol Paulo. In both projects, she dropped any trace of gestural comedy to build characters who speak little and rely on physical restraint.
But the box office doesn't always reward risk.
In January 2024, Un mal día lo tiene cualquiera hit theaters, a black comedy that marked the directing debut of Eva Hache, backed by Álex de la Iglesia. Polvorosa carried the entire film, playing a unhinged control freak caught in a nightlong spiral through Madrid. The film cost three million euros and wrapped its commercial theatrical run with 85,355 euros in total box office.
