At age 15, Ashley Park was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She spent eight months in a pediatric oncology ward, and that clinical experience erased any trace of stage fright from her later training.
Medicine saved her, and theater took care of the rest.
In 2014, she made her Broadway debut in a supporting role in the musical Mamma Mia! at the Broadhurst Theatre. It didn't take long for her to climb the ranks of New York's theater scene. By 2015, she was already part of the cast of The King and I at Lincoln Center.
Her big break came in 2018. She played Gretchen Wieners in the musical adaptation of Mean Girls and earned a Tony Award nomination. Critics praised her physical ability for gestural comedy and her technical precision on stage.
And the move to television was inevitable.
In 2020 she moved to Paris to film the first installment of Emily in Paris. Her character, Mindy Chen, wasn't the lead, but she ended up stealing screen time thanks to her vocal talent. Park insisted on singing her own songs, which forced the production to handle complex music rights for the following seasons.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Girls5eva under the production of Tina Fey. The series explored the fading fame of pop stars, and she played the group's fifth member (who died in an Infinity Pool accident). In 2023, she appeared in Netflix's Beef and in the third season of Only Murders in the Building.
But Park didn't want to limit herself to musicals.
In 2023, she headlined Joy Ride alongside Stephanie Hsu. The film was a bet on raunchy, Asian American humor that earned 15.9 million dollars at the domestic U.S. box office. It was her first major leading role in a big studio commercial film.
During a vacation in Thailand in January 2024, Park developed tonsillitis that led to a critical septic shock. She spent several weeks in intensive care in foreign hospitals before she could fly back home. Her recovery was complex and required extensive medical follow-up for months.
Her recovery affected the filming schedule of her pending projects in Europe. But in May 2024, she returned to work and was spotted at fashion events in Paris. In June 2024, Netflix premiered the new episodes of her flagship series, in which her character carries much of the secondary storyline.
Her role in the Mean Girls musical film in 2024 was a brief cameo as a French teacher. It was a direct nod to her theater roots before she made the leap to the big screen. The film's budget reached 36 million dollars.
