In the summer of 1991, Arnold Schwarzenegger showed up in his leather jacket on the set of a music video to hold at gunpoint a five-foot-nine man who had been locked in the dressing room for two hours. The actor was not filming a James Cameron production but waiting for William Bruce Rose Jr. to promote Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The song was You Could Be Mine, and the singer was already operating with the impunity of an old-Hollywood tycoon.
Axl Rose arrived in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, fleeing a childhood marked by abuse in Lafayette and some twenty arrests in Indiana. He slept on the street or on borrowed couches between the Sunset Strip and Santa Monica Boulevard. Yet he had a vocal range of nearly six octaves and a hard-to-tame rage that fit perfectly with Slash's guitar and Duff McKagan's bass.
Nobody expected them to survive their first summer.
With Appetite for Destruction in 1987, the band took a full year to take off on the sales charts. David Geffen had to call in personal favors with MTV so they would air the video for Welcome to the Jungle late at night. The channel's switchboard collapsed within ten minutes from viewer calls, and over the years the album sold more than thirty million copies worldwide.
Axl Rose never wanted to be just a typical rock star. He was obsessed with auteur cinema, epic productions and the audiovisual storytelling of directors like David Lynch or Martin Scorsese. When it came time to record the follow-up to his debut, he insisted on a simultaneous double album with thirty songs.
In 1991, the double project Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II came out. World tours became logistical battlegrounds, with concerts starting three hours late because the singer demanded hot food from specific restaurants two hundred kilometers from the stadium or simply decided to watch movies in his hotel.
Then he became determined to shoot a film trilogy in the form of music short films. He hired director Andy Morahan and based the storylines on tales from his friend Del James to film Don’t Cry, November Rain and Estranged. The record label watched in horror as the bills piled up amid aerial helicopter shots in New Mexico, replicas of churches in the desert and digital footage of dolphins crossing the asphalt.
The budget spiraled out of control.
That trilogy ended up costing more than seven million dollars of the era's money. Axl demanded absolute control over the editing, reviewed every frame like a veteran editor and vetoed shots if the lighting didn't match the dramatic tone of the lyrics. It was less a record promotion than a frustrated filmmaker with someone else's checkbook.
By the mid-1990s, the classic lineup imploded due to internal tensions and contracts that gave Rose legal control over the band's name. Slash and McKagan jumped ship, and the vocalist secluded himself at his Malibu mansion to begin the most insane production in recorded music history.
The album was called Chinese Democracy and took fourteen years to complete. Dozens of session guitarists, renowned producers fired midway through mixing and surreal whims passed through the studios. Among them was the construction of a henhouse inside the recording room for guitarist Buckethead.
The label Geffen spent thirteen million dollars before the final master was released commercially in 2008. No mid-sized film studio would have tolerated such a bloodbath without canceling the shoot. But Rose held out, entrenched in his paranoid perfectionism, until he delivered a dense album loaded with orchestral layers and digital arrangements that left critics bewildered.
Beyond the studio, he lent his voice to the announcer Tommy Smith in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004 and accepted occasional appearances in Warner Bros. animated projects. In 2016, he stood in for Brian Johnson as frontman of AC/DC during an international tour, and then made peace with Slash and McKagan to organize the tour Not in This Lifetime…, which grossed more than five hundred eighty million dollars over three years.
In December 2023, the record label released the single The General, a track salvaged from recording sessions that had begun twenty-four years earlier.

Things you probably didn't know about Axl Rose
When asked what kind of music and bands he enjoys
My growth was stopped at two years old. And when they talk about Axl Rose being a screaming two-year-old, they're right. There's a screaming two-year-old who's real pissed off and hides and won't show himself that often, even to me. Because I couldn't protect him. And the world didn't protect him.
We wish we were doing it, of course, under much better circumstances, but this man was loved. For Chris.
