Béatrice Dalle wasn't looking for a camera when Jean-Jacques Beineix found her in a press photo. It was 1985, and she was living on the street, sleeping wherever she could, with no interest whatsoever in acting. But the director of 37°2 le matin needed a force of nature to play Betty, and that girl with the imperfect smile was the only real option.
The film's release in 1986 blew up the French box office with more than three and a half million moviegoers. Within just a few weeks, Dalle went from destitution to the face of the new French cinema. And she did it without a single drama class, because her technique was simply being present.
That early success could have been her professional grave.
The industry tried to tame her, but she answered with arrests for jewelry theft and scandals on movie sets. Béatrice never saw film as a long-distance race. For her, it was a way to pay the rent without giving up her freedom. In 1991, police arrested her in Paris for shoplifting from a jewelry store, and the tabloids rubbed their hands together over her fall.
Once the commercial glitz faded, Claire Denis appeared to rescue her from the oblivion of big productions. In 1994, they shot J’ai pas sommeil, and that marked the start of one of the rawest collaborations in European cinema. Dalle stopped being the sex bomb of the eighties and became an almost animal physical presence.
In 2001, she appeared in Trouble Every Day.
The film caused fainting spells at the Cannes Film Festival with its explicit violence and its take on sexual cannibalism. But Dalle defended the project with a ferocity that frightened the most conservative critics. She played a sick woman who devoured her lovers, and she did it with a fragility nobody expected from a woman with her rebellious track record.
And then came the theater.
Despite her aversion to discipline, in 2014 she accepted the challenge of starring in Lucrèce Borgia under David Bobée's direction. It was an absolute critical success. The woman who said she hated scripts learned classical texts by heart and filled French national theaters for months, because her raspy voice connected with audiences in a way that academy actresses couldn't.
Her private life was always a far denser subject than her film roles. In 2005, she married Guénaël Meziani inside a prison while he was serving a sentence for rape. Béatrice met him during the filming of a movie at the Ploemeur detention center and decided that this man was her absolute priority, above any Hollywood contract.
But the marriage ended in 2014 when he was released from prison and the violence moved into the home.
She never regretted her decisions, because for her, mistakes are part of technical learning. In 2019, she took part in Lux Æterna by Gaspar Noé, where she played herself on a chaotic set surrounded by strobe lights and screams. The film was shot in just five days and stood as a testament to her physical endurance in front of the camera.
She still chooses projects on instinct or out of personal friendship with directors.
In 2023, she premiered La Bête dans la jungle by Patric Chiha, bringing a somber maturity to a story about waiting and lost time. She no longer needs the close-ups of her youth, because her silhouette is enough to fill the frame. In 2024, she shot Maldoror under Fabrice Du Welz, playing a woman who survives on the margins of a rotten society.
The production of Maldoror had a budget of ten million euros to recreate 1990s Belgium.
