At nine years old, Rebbeca Marie Gomez understood what it cost to pay a mortgage. Her family lost their home and ended up crammed into her grandparents' garage in Inglewood, a Los Angeles suburb marked by economic strain. This was no school drama, because hunger was very real.
Money had to come in at home.
So the little girl started looking for auditions for TV commercials and commercial voiceovers before she turned twelve. When she opened a YouTube account in 2011 to post rap covers recorded with her laptop microphone, nobody anticipated that those homemade videos would reach the offices of Sony Music. Producer Dr. Luke put a joint record deal with Kemosabe and RCA Records in front of her when she was barely fourteen.
In 2014 she made a direct commercial impact with the single Shower, which entered the top twenty most-streamed songs in the United States. But English-language bubblegum pop quickly became a production cage where her opinion counted for little.
Hollywood noticed the millions of followers she had built on social media and signed her for the screen. In 2015 she shot two episodes of the TV series Empire, playing Valentina Galindo. Her work fulfilled the technical assignment and opened the door to big-budget casting calls in California.
Two years later, director Dean Israelite gave her the role of Trini in the film reboot of Power Rangers (2017). Lionsgate's press departments marketed the character as the first openly queer superheroine in a big-budget youth blockbuster.
But the movie crashed hard at the box office.
The production cost $100 million and barely grossed $142 million worldwide, a figure that instantly buried any plan to rush out sequels. In the studio business, the numbers always outweigh good intentions.
In 2018 she starred in the science fiction film A.X.L., directed by Oliver Daly. The movie grossed less than nine million dollars on a budget of ten, confirming that traditional action box office did not guarantee her professional stability.
After running into the limits of the Burbank offices, she decided to write in Spanish, the language she grew up hearing from her grandparents in the Inglewood garage. In 2017 she released the track Mayores with Bad Bunny.
The music video for Mayores surpassed one billion views on YouTube and wore down the resistance of Latin radio stations that tried to censor its lyrics. The following year she doubled down with Sin Pijama alongside Natti Natasha.
And the industry had to stay quiet.
She released her first studio album in 2019 under the title Mala Santa, followed by Esquemas in 2022. In 2023 she put out Esquinas, and in 2024 she presented Encuentros, two projects in which she explored traditional music and the sound of Mexican regional music without compromising for the commercial dance floor.
Her return to Hollywood's big leagues didn't happen in front of the camera but locked in a sound booth. In 2023 she voiced Khaji-Da in Blue Beetle, the film adaptation of the DC character directed by Angel Manuel Soto. She recorded her lines in double sessions to give the alien armor a dry, robotic tone that interacted with actor Xolo Maridueña.
In 2025 she premiered the autobiographical documentary Rebbeca, a feature film focused on the process of producing her albums in Mexico and the personal consequences of the childhood eviction she experienced twenty years earlier.
The project's distribution collapsed without the backing of the major studios in Los Angeles. The final cut ran 102 minutes, built from cell phone recordings and hard drives rescued from her family circle.
