In March 2011, Santiago Segura released Torrente 4: Crisis Letal, and put Belén Esteban on the commercial big screen in a supporting role as a deranged landlady. She was not a trained actress and did not aim to be one. Her name in the credits was a ruthless commercial calculation: pulling mass daytime TV audiences into theaters.
That opening weekend, the film grossed 8.4 million euros, the highest opening figure for a Spanish film at the box office up to that date.
And the experiment was a success.
The Madrid native had already spent a decade dominating the small screen without any formal acting training. Her education came from surviving daily live broadcasts under blazing lights while millions of viewers scrutinized every expression on her face.
For fourteen consecutive seasons, Sálvame operated as a reality TV serial broadcast entirely live. On that set, Esteban developed a sense of timing that many comedy directors chase in vain on their shoots. She knew how to hold silence before a reply and understood when to look into the camera to break the rhythm of the broadcast.
Her stint in scripted television, in the special episode of Aída aired in 2011, exposed her technical limits. She worked well when parodying herself, but struggled to stick to floor marks and the scripted lines memorized from the writers.
So the film and TV industry got the message and stopped asking her to play supporting roles unrelated to her own life story.
In June 2023, Mediaset canceled the daytime magazine show after months of ratings declines and editorial changes at the network. Some critics considered her run of media momentum in front of the cameras to be over.
But the numbers once again defied the forecasts.
At the end of 2023, Netflix premiered the first part of the docu-reality ¡Sálvese quien pueda!, and the format climbed to the No. 1 spot in Spain's catalog for fourteen days in a row. The production dispensed with fixed sets and sent the crew to shoot in Miami and Mexico City with handheld cameras.
In May 2024, the production company Fabricantes Studio launched Ni que fuéramos Shhh through streaming channels on YouTube and Twitch. A few weeks later, the show moved to free-to-air television on the Ten channel. Esteban sat in a spare studio surrounded by screens showing viewer messages in real time, holding the attention of more than two hundred thousand concurrent viewers with no safety net.
Beyond the studio, she tried her luck in the food industry with Los Sabores de la Esteban, a company founded in 2021 to sell gazpacho and potato chips. In its 2022 fiscal year, the company reported a 94% drop in profits compared with the previous year, hit by rising sunflower oil prices and packaging costs.
