Norberto Juan Ortiz Osborne stands six foot four and stepped onto a dramatic set for the first time with only half-learned lines. In 1990 he arrived at the Televisa studios in Mexico City to co-star in the telenovela Amor de nadie alongside Lucía Méndez. It seemed like an odd move for an Andalusian melodic singer raised among wineries, but the serial racked up 199 episodes aired with massive audiences across Latin America.
Nobody in Spain expected him to keep up such a demanding daily recording schedule.
When he returned in 1992, Valerio Lazarov immediately recognized the appeal of this sardonic aristocrat, who treated the camera like a regular bar buddy. He put him in charge of Telecinco's late-night schedule with Contacto con tacto, a dating show packed with double-edged jokes and velvet sofas that shattered the ratings.
That formula worked because Osborne did not play a presenter; he played himself in a formal pajama look. In 1993 he signed with Antena 3 to host Lluvia de estrellas and Menudas estrellas, two family-friendly formats that dominated free-to-air television for almost a decade.
But the white presenter's suit soon felt too tight as new reality TV formats swept across the schedules in the early 2000s.
After an uneven period on regional channels, he chose to step onto the stage without a dramatic safety net. In 2011 he teamed up with comedian Paco Arévalo to stage the comedy Mellizos, a show built on traditional jokes, private anecdotes and folk songs played on the piano.
They toured provincial auditoriums and commercial theaters on Madrid's Gran Vía until 2015, with spin-off productions such as Por humor al arte. The show racked up more than 400 live performances and drew over half a million audience members, without any backing from Madrid's theater critics.
The trick was not pretending to have acting rigor.
And the box office responded with packed houses across half of Spain.
In September 2015, production company Proamagna created an interview format for Televisión Española that revived his media relevance: En la tuya o en la mía. The technical setup was simple: Bertín welcomed figures from politics, sports and show business onto oversized sofas while uncorking wine and trying, unsuccessfully, to light induction burners.
His interview with Mariano Rajoy before the 2015 general elections drew 4,334,000 viewers to the state broadcaster. That number sparked a fierce bidding war among networks for the show's broadcast rights.
In May 2016, the host moved the show to Telecinco under the title Mi casa es la tuya. The private channel agreed to pay 225,000 euros per episode, compared with the 121,000 euros RTVE had been paying, under a deal requiring at least ninety minutes of edited footage per episode.
