Blanchard Ryan worked in the MTV offices long before anyone knew her name. During the 1990s, she coordinated presenters and handled production tasks that had nothing to do with the glamour of the cameras. She was an efficient employee in an industry that chews through résumés every day.
In 1998, she landed a very small role in On the Seventh Day. It didn't change her life, but it helped her realize she preferred being in front of the spotlight. She alternated office jobs with brief appearances on shows like Sex and the City, where she had only a couple of lines.
And then came the script nobody wanted to shoot.
Chris Kentis was looking for an actress willing to spend hours in the water surrounded by dangerous animals. In 2003 Blanchard Ryan took on the challenge of starring in Open Water. There were no digital effects or green screens to protect the actors from the environment.
The movie cost barely $120,000 and was shot in an almost family-like atmosphere. Ryan and her co-star wore metal mesh under their wetsuits to protect against real shark bites. The shoot was a physical ordeal that lasted weeks in open water.
At the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, Lionsgate bought the distribution rights for $8 million. It was a win-win deal for everyone. The film grossed nearly $55 million worldwide, and Ryan won a Saturn Award for her performance.
But the Hollywood industry is fickle when it comes to independent hits.
Despite the commercial impact of her debut, Ryan never became a star of big productions. In 2008, she took part in The Brooklyn Heist, and a year later she had a supporting role in It's Complicated alongside Meryl Streep. These were supporting parts that kept her busy but far from the front lines.
Because she never sought fame for its own sake.
Her father was the president of the NHL hockey league, and she grew up in an environment where hard work mattered more than red carpets. Between 2011 and 2012 she worked on the series Blue Bloods, playing Aubrey Devlin. She felt comfortable in television because the pace was fast and steady.
In 2017, she shot Good Bones under the direction of Tim Bohn. It was a small project that flew under the radar for the general public, but it allowed her to explore a slower, more dramatic register. So she kept choosing projects for the quality of the script rather than the size of the paycheck.
In 2022, she took part in the thriller The Girl in the Window. The film had a limited release and focused on the home digital rental market. The budget was minimal, and critics almost unanimously ignored the release.
