Bobby Kolli didn't start his career giving orders behind the camera. Before anyone knew him by his nickname in directing credits, he wrote scripts for other filmmakers in the Hyderabad film industry. He worked behind the scenes for years, polishing other people's stories while learning how a film set really works.
In 2014 he released Power, and the result was a direct knockout. The film grossed over 450 million rupees during its theatrical run. It marked the start of a career tied to mass commercial cinema that chases easy applause and quick profits.
And the gamble paid off.
But the road wasn't always uphill. In 2016, he directed Sardaar Gabbar Singh under suffocating media pressure. The film received a cold reception from specialist critics, and its box office numbers fell short of investors' expectations. That setback forced the director to rethink how he approached major productions with top-tier stars.
His redemption came in 2017 with the release of Jai Lava Kusa. On this production, the filmmaker had to manage the ego and talent of Jr. NTR in a triple leading role. It was a complicated technical feat, because the shoot demanded precise coordination so that the three versions of the actor could interact on screen convincingly.
The film brought in 1,300 million rupees in total global gross. This result restored his credibility among the most influential producers in Tollywood. So Bobby Kolli used that momentum to work with veteran actors looking to regain their place in the youth market.
The pressure was enormous.
In 2019 he shot Venky Mama with a cast led by Venkatesh and Naga Chaitanya. The script blended rural comedy with military drama and managed to attract a very specific family audience. The film ended its commercial run with solid profits despite fierce competition from other simultaneous releases.
The director's biggest financial milestone came in 2023 with the release of Waltair Veerayya. This time, he cast Chiranjeevi as the sole lead in an action story set in port cities. The production featured international locations and fight sequences with a level of digital effects unusual for his previous work.
The film crossed the 2,300 million rupees mark in total box office earnings. This commercial success allowed him to negotiate contracts with greater creative freedom and budgets that exceed the usual standards of the Telangana region. But Bobby Kolli has always maintained that his priority is the pace of the storytelling over visual fireworks.
Because mass cinema depends on an emotional connection with the average viewer.
In 2024, he began pre-production on his next feature film with Nandamuri Balakrishna under the working title Daaku Maharaaj. The contract with the production company Sithara Entertainments sets a shooting schedule of 120 intensive days. The production design budget for this film amounts to 150 million rupees for interior set construction alone.
