Boman Irani waited tables at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay long before anyone knew his name. He was not an aspiring actor looking for a break (he didn't even think about it), but a young man who needed to pay his bills. For fourteen years, he served french fries at the family bakery on Grant Road.
Photography arrived as a technical refuge and a way to earn extra money. He sold his camera to buy a better one and ended up covering major international boxing events. But theater came knocking when his hair had already turned gray and his life seemed settled between negatives and flour.
He made his film debut after turning forty.
In 2001 he appeared in Everybody Says I’m Fine!, but the real buzz wouldn't arrive until a couple of years later. In 2003 he played Dr. J.C. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., and his face became impossible for mainstream audiences to ignore. That role as a strict father-in-law and unhinged doctor gave him a level of visibility that other actors chase for decades.
And the industry opened its doors wide for him.
Irani did not fit the Bollywood leading man mold, because his strength lay in an unusual restraint. In 2006, he took part in Lage Raho Munna Bhai and shortly after in the thriller Don. His ability to move from physical comedy to the calculating villain kept him away from generic supporting roles.
In 2009 the project that cemented his international status arrived. He played Viru Sahastrabuddhe in 3 Idiots (a university dean obsessed with extreme competition). The film grossed more than $60 million worldwide, and his character became an educational archetype across much of the world.
Before filming, he usually studies his characters' physical quirks. For that professor, he wore a dental prosthesis and learned to write with both hands at the same time. Irani treats acting as a technical discipline closer to craftsmanship than to the mystique of the artist.
He kept working on major productions such as Housefull in 2010 and Happy New Year in 2014. But his interest began shifting toward story structure. In 2019, he founded Spiral Bound, an initiative to teach screenwriting, where he invited professionals from around the world to train new Indian writers.
His training as a photographer never fully left him.
In 2023 he appeared in Dunki alongside Shah Rukh Khan, directed by Rajkumar Hirani. That shoot coincided with preparations for his most ambitious move behind the camera. Irani decided that maturity was the right time to stop taking orders from others.
In 2024, he presented his first feature film as director, titled The Mehta Boys. He co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris (Oscar winner for Birdman) and also handled the production. The story centers on the troubled relationship between a father and his son over 48 hours of constant tension.
The film had its world premiere at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival in September 2024. The shoot was filmed entirely on location in Mumbai and the United States under a strict production schedule of just a few weeks.
In 2024, the production company Irani Movietone confirmed that the post-production budget stayed within its initially planned limits.
