Brigette Lundy-Paine was born in Dallas in 1994 but grew up in the creative community of Alameda, California. Their parents were actors, which helped the acting bug take hold at home early on. Before turning twenty, they were already looking for roles in independent productions in New York.
In 2017, she landed the role of Casey Gardner in the series Atypical. She played a high school athlete who had to protect her younger brother while discovering her own identity. The show ran for four seasons and gave her a global platform she hadn't expected.
Netflix's casting changed everything.
But her training didn't come only from film sets. She studied at New York University, where she began experimenting with performance art and music. For Lundy-Paine, acting was never an end in itself but simply another tool.
In 2017, she appeared in the film The Glass Castle alongside Brie Larson. It was a complex shoot based on Jeannette Walls' memoir, in which she played Maureen Walls. That experience in a big-budget drama confirmed her ability to carry emotionally intense scenes.
In 2020, she faced the challenge of joining a cult franchise. She filmed Bill & Ted Face the Music, playing Billie Logan, the daughter of the character played by Keanu Reeves. She had to study the gestures and speech rhythms of Reeves in the original films so that the resemblance would feel natural.
So they spent weeks rehearsing with Samara Weaving to build the comedic duo chemistry the script required. The film premiered during the pandemic and became a source of optimism for many viewers. But after that project, they chose to step away from conventional blockbusters.
She wasn't chasing traditional fame.
She founded the vocal art group Subtle Pride and launched the publication Waif Magazine. These initiatives let her control her public image without relying on public relations agencies in Los Angeles. In 2019, she publicly came out as non-binary through her social media.
In 2024, they starred in I Saw the TV Glow under the direction of Jane Schoenbrun. The film explores obsession with an old television series and the horror that emerges from nostalgia. Filming took place in various locations in New Jersey over the summer.
The production had a budget of less than 10 million dollars. Lundy-Paine played Maddy, a dark character who serves as the catalyst for the plot. Critics at the Sundance Film Festival praised their economy of gestures and physical presence on screen.
And the risk paid off.
To prepare for the role of Maddy, she read essays on dysphoria and the impact of media on the teenage psyche. She did not use stunt doubles for the most physically intense scenes in the industrial suburbs. Filming of her main sequences was completed in twenty-eight working days.
