Brighton Sharbino needed only a few seconds of staring at some flowers for half the world to want to adopt her and the other half to be afraid of her. It happened in 2014. That scene in the fourth season of The Walking Dead defined her public image before she could even get her driver's license.
Nobody expected a twelve-year-old girl to hold her gaze against Melissa McBride.
Born in Flower Mound, Texas, in 2002, her entry into the industry was no casting accident. By 2008, she was already on the set of Friday Night Lights, and shortly after she appeared in Hannah Montana. But the AMC post-apocalyptic drama demanded something few child actors can deliver without seeming forced. She played a potential psychopath with a fragility that disarmed the audience.
Horror was her first language.
After leaving the series, she looked for projects that would move her away from the stigma of the disturbed little girl. In 2016 she appeared in Miracles from Heaven alongside Jennifer Garner. It was a $ 13 million production that performed well at the U.S. box office (more than 73 million in earnings) and allowed her to explore a much friendlier, family-oriented range.
In 2017, she shot Bitch, a far rawer and stranger independent film. It was a risky bet under the direction of Marianna Palka. It taught her that her place was on the margins of the conventional industry, where scripts don't always aim for a happy ending.
But her definitive leap into leading roles came in 2019 with Radioflash. In this survival thriller, she plays a young woman with technological skills in a world without electricity. It's a film that rests almost entirely on her shoulders. They filmed in the mountainous landscapes of Washington under demanding physical conditions, which the actress overcame without stunt doubles in most scenes.
Genre cinema became her safe haven.
During 2020 and 2021, she kept a presence on digital platforms with Zoe Valentine. It's a series aimed at a teen audience, but Sharbino approached it with the same seriousness as her previous work on national television. For her, the platform is secondary if the character has rough edges to refine.
In 2022, she appeared in the thriller The Way Out, and in 2023 she premiered The Man in the White Van at film festivals. In this latter project, directed by Warren Skeels, the story is set in the 1970s and is based on real events involving a serial killer. The production had a modest budget and was filmed mainly on location in Florida during the final quarter of the year.
