Bruna Reis Maia was born in Duque de Caxias, and by the age of seven she was already crying in front of millions of people. In 2003, she played Salete in Mulheres Apaixonadas, and that little girl with glasses was etched into Brazil's collective memory. It was a ratings phenomenon that forced the industry to treat her like a professional before her time.
But growing up under the spotlight of Globo network comes at a high price.
During her teenage years, she went from one production to another, including América in 2005 and Cobras & Lagartos in 2006. At the time, audiences saw her as the eternal daughter of national television. She signed exclusivity contracts that kept her tied to the studios for ten months a year. Before she came of age, she had already logged more time on sets than many veterans of the industry.
And the pressure over her appearance started to take its toll.
In 2012, she sought a change with the role of Lurdinha in Salve Jorge. She left behind her childlike image to play a young woman from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The impact was such that the tabloid press began chasing her with aggressive intensity. Around that time, her private life began generating more headlines than her acting.
Her step outside her comfort zone came in 2018 with the villain role in Deus Salve o Rei. It was a risky bet, since early reviews were harsh about her portrayal of Princess Catarina. But she didn't back down and finished the series with the respect of her castmates. That year, she decided not to renew her long-term contract with Globo after nearly two decades with the company.
She was looking for creative freedom outside of telenovelas.
In 2020, she signed with Netflix to star in Maldivas, a series that blended comedy and mystery. This move allowed her to explore different shooting schedules and a more cinematic visual language. From then on, she started choosing projects for their technical quality rather than the mass exposure that broadcast television offered.
Her move to the United States was no casting accident. In 2023, she landed the role of Jenny Kord in the superhero movie Blue Beetle. She became the first Brazilian to star in a production of this scale in the DC Comics universe. The film grossed 130 million dollars worldwide and opened the doors of the Hollywood actors' union to her.
To shoot in Atlanta, she had to refine an English she already spoke fluently but needed a specific professional register for. In 2024, she worked on the series Amor da Minha Vida for the Disney+ platform. On this project she not only acted but also served as co-director of some episodes. Her profile shifted decisively toward decision-making behind the camera.
And the international market responded quickly.
In 2025, her participation in the sixth season of the series The Handmaid’s Tale was confirmed. Filming was scheduled in Toronto under strict confidentiality measures to protect the final storyline. Her salary per episode reached six figures in the U.S. market. But she kept her home base in Brazil to run her own talent management company.
In 2026, she signed with an independent production company to develop stories centered on Latino identity in California. Post-production on her latest feature film that same year required an additional budget of two million dollars for visual effects. Her contract stipulated that she kept control over the final cut of her scenes.
