Antón Álvarez Alfaro was born in Madrid in 1990 and, before he was calling the shots on a film crew, he was flipping burgers at a Pans & Company in Moncloa. Long before film festivals learned his first name, he was recording rough demos under the alias Crema. He was part of the Agorazein collective. They sold handmade copies outside metro stations and defended a street-level purism that refused any compromise with commercial radio.
Nobody saw the shift coming.
In 2011, he decided to kill off the purist rapper and adopt the alias C. Tangana. The move was neither accidental nor the result of a spontaneous revelation, but a calculated business decision down to the last detail. He studied Philosophy at the Complutense University. But he understood, before his aesthetics professors did, that the music industry demanded a total visual narrative in which the celebrity weighed as much as the sound.
And the plan required money. In 2017, he signed with Sony Music for the most expensive contract in Spanish hip hop, a deal that many of his former underground comrades branded an unforgivable betrayal. That cash injection funded catchy singles like Mala mujer and set the stage for the next demolition of his own mask.
Álvarez wanted something else.
When the music project hit its peak tension in 2021 with the album El Madrileño, the real weight of the concept rested on its visual staging. To build that universe, he founded the company Little Spain in Los Angeles with Santos Bacana, Cristina Trenas and Rogelio González. They shot pieces that worked as standalone short films, drawing on Iberian everyday life and the grainy texture of 16 mm film.
In 2023, the documentary Esta ambición desmedida laid bare the Sin cantar ni afinar tour without filters. The massive production ran up a debt of several million euros in its first weeks, stubbornly trying to fit an entire symphony orchestra inside a sports arena. The film avoided the complacent promotional video. Santos Bacana and his team showed a man in over his head, haggling over budgets with promoters and confessing on camera that his real goal was to direct fiction.
In September 2024, he premiered his debut feature as a director, titled La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés, opening the New Directors section at the San Sebastián Film Festival. In the credits, he dropped his commercial stage name and signed with his real name. The story avoided a condescending portrayal and instead explored a painful secret kept for decades within a Romani family, with photography shared by Uri Barcelona and Diego Trenas.
The plan was always to make films.
So he took the risk of staying off screen. He let Yerai Cortés's guitar carry the drama and focused his work on the script's structure, the editing rhythm and the tonal balance. The film won a special jury mention at the San Sebastián festival.
The project required three years of filming, combining family archives and direct sound. It locked in a final runtime of 95 minutes and secured its distribution in Spanish commercial theaters through A Contracorriente Films on December 20, 2024.
