Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was born in the Bronx in 1992 and grew up in Highbridge surrounded by her family's Dominican and Trinidadian heritage. Before the cameras and microphones, she worked at a Manhattan supermarket until she was fired at eighteen. So she decided to look for a quick way out in the world of striptease, to escape an abusive relationship and pay for her studies.
Her time in nightclubs was not a tragedy but pure survival strategy. In that environment she learned to handle an audience and build a celebrity persona that would soon take over social media with brutal honesty. Her Instagram videos began going viral for the way she spoke without filters about money, sex and life in the neighborhood.
And the gamble paid off.
The raw humor she showed online landed her directly in the cast of Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015. There, she didn't pretend. Her clashes and charisma gave her a visibility that music industry executives could no longer ignore. But she knew television was a springboard with an expiration date, and she left the show in 2016 to focus on her first mixtape.
In 2017, she released the single Bodak Yellow, becoming the first solo female rapper to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in nearly two decades. The success of her album Invasion of Privacy in 2018 immediately opened the doors of Hollywood to her. Her on-screen magnetism was obvious, and casting directors were looking for the natural energy of the Bronx.
Her real film debut came in 2019 with Hustlers. In this movie she shared scenes with Jennifer Lopez and played Diamond, a stripper whose realism came from her own experiences years earlier. Her shoot lasted only a few weeks, but her presence helped the film gross more than $150 million worldwide.
The numbers don't lie.
In 2021, she joined one of the most profitable franchises in history with her appearance in F9 from the Fast & Furious saga. She played Leysa, a woman connected to Dominic Toretto's past who leads a team of mercenaries. It was a brief role designed to expand her personal brand in commercial action cinema and secure her place in future installments.
But a film career is not always a straight line upward. In 2022, the comedy project Assisted Living was abruptly canceled just one week before filming was set to begin. The production company cited the artist's scheduling problems and a budget that was spiraling beyond Paramount Players' initial estimates.
Despite that financial setback, she stayed relevant in other areas of entertainment. In 2023, she voiced the character Sharki B in the animated film Baby Shark's Big Movie! to diversify her income. She aimed to reach a children's and family audience, which tends to be far more loyal and profitable over the long term than the adult rap market.
In March 2024, she released the track Enough (Miami), produced by DJ Cassius Jay, after months of musical silence. Cardi B's strategy is to space out her releases to keep her personal brand value at peak levels. The artist closed that fiscal year with an estimated net worth of $80 million from her royalties and advertising contracts.
