Before filling venues with unbuttoned shirts and electrified vallenato, Carlos Vives earned his living memorizing lines in front of cathode-ray tube cameras. He arrived in Bogotá in the late seventies to study advertising, but ended up in the classrooms of the National School of Dramatic Arts. He wanted to act above any other ambition.
In 1982, he made his television debut in Tiempo sin huella, a modest production that barely gave him visibility. Four years later, he laced up boxing gloves to star in Gallito Ramírez. More than twelve million Colombians glued themselves to their TV sets every night to follow the adventures of that humble boxer from a Caribbean neighborhood. The gossip press amplified the social impact when he ended up marrying his co-star, Margarita Rosa de Francisco.
That changed the game.
International offers soon followed. In 1988, he moved to Puerto Rico to star in soap operas on Telemundo such as La otra and Aventurera. The pay was good, and he learned the industrial pace of daily shot-reverse-shot filming, but conventional melodramas began to stifle his artistic ambitions.
In 1991, production company Caracol Televisión brought him a biographical project about composer Rafael Escalona. The series, simply titled Escalona, required its lead actor to sing classic pieces a cappella and with live accordion on set. Vives accepted without fully understanding the scope of the project.
Television was the laboratory where he experimented with folk music before stepping into a formal recording studio with commercial ambitions.
The series' impact went far beyond audience ratings. The soundtrack, released by the Sonolux label in two volumes between 1991 and 1992, sold hundreds of thousands of copies within weeks. It was not an ordinary album but a direct spin-off of the television phenomenon of the era.
No one in the record industry saw that box office hit coming.
That on-screen success completely transformed his career. Vives recruited several of the musicians he had shared the set with, formed the band La Provincia, and took the sound of the shoot on massive tours across the continent. Music consumed the actor. For more than two decades, acting offers sat in a drawer while he piled up albums and international stages.
It took three decades before he committed again to a long-running fictional production. In the meantime, he lent his voice to the main theme of Encanto in 2021, the Disney animated film set in Colombia that earned more than two hundred and fifty million dollars at the international box office after movie theaters reopened.
The American giant capitalized on that commercial momentum to cast him as the lead in 2023. In the series El club de los graves, produced for the Disney+ platform, Vives took on the role of Amaranto Molina, an unconventional music teacher at a school for young talents.
Filming took place on location in Bogotá and Cundinamarca with a crew of more than one hundred people and a production schedule of nearly four months. The platform hired specialized sound engineers to synchronize the live acoustic takes with the orchestral track finished in Los Angeles, bringing the final production budget to just over eleven million dollars.
