Cherie Chung did not win the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1979. She placed fourth because she couldn't walk smoothly in high heels. That supposed lack of elegance in front of the judges is what caught the attention of casting directors at Shaw Brothers studio.
They were looking for faces that didn't look like porcelain, and she had a gaze that cut through the lens. Her debut came in 1980 with The Enigmatic Case, directed by Johnnie To. It was a dry, no-frills start that set her apart from the decorative actress archetype of the era.
The industry saw something in her that the pageant judges overlooked.
And the gamble paid off right away. In 1981, she filmed The Story of Woo Viet alongside Chow Yun-fat, and that professional partnership changed the course of commercial cinema in the British colony. They made seven films together and set a standard of on-screen chemistry that no one has managed to replicate in the Asian market.
During the 1980s, Chung's career was non-stop. She took part in dozens of productions ranging from romantic drama to pure action. But it was in 1987 that she reached her peak with An Autumn's Tale.
In that film she played a student in New York, and her performance earned her a nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Audiences constantly compared her to Hollywood's great stars for her natural magnetism. She made sixty films in just ten years of active career.
The work pace was exhausting but necessary to maintain status in an industry that devoured names every week.
So she used her peak popularity to choose projects with heavyweight directors such as Tsui Hark. In 1986, she starred in Peking Opera Blues, where she showed she could carry a complex story without depending on a male figure beside her. It confirmed her as a serious actress and not just an advertising face.
Audiences dubbed her the Marilyn Monroe of the East.
In 1991, the actress made a decision that stunned the studios. She married publicist Mike Chu and decided to leave the film industry for good. She was only 31 years old and at the height of her commercial career following the worldwide success of Once a Thief.
Many thought it was a temporary break, but the million-dollar offers she received in the following years ended up in the trash. Chung preferred to devote her time to environmental activism and landscape photography. She never returned to a film set to play a fictional role.
She maintained that stance even after her husband passed away in 2007.
In 2014, she organized her first solo photography exhibition, titled To Hong Kong with Love. The images showed a raw city, far from the glamour she had personified in her youth. The exhibition raised funds for local environmental organizations.
Her most recent recorded professional activity was an advertising campaign for a luxury cosmetics brand in 2023. Her contract stipulated that photo shoots could not last more than six hours per day. Her personal archive of film negatives exceeds ten thousand analog shots.
