Rejection as a Launching Pad

Cho Mi-yeon spent five years in the rehearsal rooms of YG Entertainment before realizing her path did not lie there. She was part of the trainee group that would go on to become Blackpink, but she left the agency shortly before the official debut. It was a hard blow that forced her to rethink her career outside the traditional spotlight. She decided to keep studying music on her own.

The industry doesn't forgive silence.

In 2018 she joined Cube Entertainment to debut as the lead vocalist of (G)I-DLE. Her arrival in the group brought a clean vocal tone that contrasted with the aggressive production of her bandmates. That first track, titled Latata, racked up millions of views within a few weeks and put the group back on Seoul's commercial map.

The Voice Behind the Avatar

Her international breakthrough did not come through a conventional film script but through video games. In 2018 she voiced the character Ahri in the virtual group K/DA for the League of Legends universe. That collaboration culminated in a performance at the world championship finals in Incheon, where augmented reality technology blended her real figure with the digital design.

And the gamble paid off.

That project allowed her to explore an acting side that she would later bring to the screen. For Mi-yeon, music has always been a vehicle toward dramatic acting. In 2020 she repeated the experience with the EP All Out, building a global audience that did not even regularly listen to Korean pop.

Short Films and the Move to the Set

The year 2021 marked her official acting debut in the web drama Replay: The Moment. She played Yoo Ha-young and was responsible for much of the original soundtrack. It was a simple role, but enough to show that her facial control in front of the camera was superior to that of many other performers who move from the stage to the film set.

That same year, she took on several acting projects in a row. She appeared in the comedy-action series Delivery and had a role in Adult Trainee on the TVING platform. With this last production, she stepped away from the pure, innocent image that Korean agencies tend to impose. But film demands a different pace.

In 2022 she released her first solo work, titled MY. The lead single Drive moved away from heavy electronic sounds in search of a more organic style. It reached No. 1 on several music TV programs during May of that year.

Discipline is her only professional secret.

Over the past 2024, she has stayed active with the group, releasing the album 2 and the EP I Sway. Her variety show appearances and her work as a host at industry events have taken up most of her schedule. In July 2024, the group's world tour confirmed dates in more than fourteen cities, with ticket sales that surpassed 100,000 tickets in the first presale phase.
