Christine Bermas broke into the Filipino film industry without asking for permission or apologizing. In 2021, she signed her first contract with Viva Artists Agency, and a few months later she was already shooting three projects at the same time. There was no adjustment period and no filler supporting roles.
Her arrival coincided with the explosion of streaming platforms in Southeast Asia. Audiences wanted new faces, and she had a presence the camera understood right away.
And it worked.
In 2022, she starred in Moonlight Butterfly under the direction of Joel Lamangan. That film put her in a dangerous position for any young actress in the Philippines, because its commercial success was quickly followed by being typecast. Fast-consumption erotic cinema was her school and her prison during the first eighteen months of her career.
But Bermas decided that nudity was a working tool, not a creative limit. During the shoot of Island of Desire in that same 2022, the actress began pushing for script changes to give her characters more psychological depth. She did not want to be just a visual draw in a mobile app's catalog.
The industry waits for no one.
At the end of 2022, the premiere of Scorpio Nights 3 arrived. The production was a high-risk bet (it was the third installment of a cult franchise launched in 1985 by Peque Gallaga), and Bermas bore the weight of constant comparisons. Local critics were harsh about the film's storyline but praised her ability to carry scenes of exhausting physical intensity.
Her change of pace came in 2023 with Nightbird. Here, the actress left behind the fragility of her early roles to play a woman seeking revenge after a night of violence. It was a physically demanding shoot, full of real bruises, that put to rest the idea that she was only good for romantic drama.
In 2024, she shot Bedspacer and established a work method built on grueling repetition. Her co-stars often note that Bermas arrives on set with her lines memorized and a discipline more reminiscent of veterans from the nineties than of profiles turned actors through social media.
Not everything in her career was applause.
Because the production pace in Manila is relentless, films are often shot in less than ten days. As a result, Bermas has had to work on projects of questionable technical quality that would have sunk less resilient names. Her ability to rescue mediocre scenes through sheer charisma is what keeps her name on the most important casting lists in the country.
In 2025, her schedule included collaborations with directors looking to move away from explicit content and toward pure psychological suspense. Viewing data for her films in international markets (especially Japan and South Korea) exceeds two million hours watched annually. The Philippine film industry closed 2024 with a 12% increase in content exports, thanks to figures with this kind of commercial pull.
