At four years old, Danna Paola Rivera Munguía was already working twelve-hour days under the lights at Televisa. While other girls her age were learning to tie their shoes, she was memorizing dialogue for Rayito de luz in 2000. The network executives quickly spotted the gold mine and handed her the lead role of María Belén a year later.
No one chooses a calling at four years old.
That children's telenovela sold records, dolls and broadcast rights to more than sixty countries. The machine allowed no breaks, and in 2004 it repeated the formula with Amy, la niña de la mochila azul, linking endless studio days with live concerts. The market responded by selling out entire print runs. By the time she was fourteen, she had five studio albums under her belt and a work pace that her parents and guardians chose not to slow down.
But the real wear and tear came in 2009 with Atrévete a Soñar, the Mexican version of Ugly Betty. It set off a sweeping commercial phenomenon that packed the Auditorio Nacional for eleven consecutive dates. The character threatened to consume her identity for good, and her record contracts tied her hand and foot.
In 2013, she made a decision the TV industry called absurd. She chose to audition for the Mexican stage production of Wicked, competing against actresses with far more operatic training. Against all odds, she landed the role of Elphaba at just eighteen years old.
Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind the Broadway scores, traveled to Mexico City to evaluate rehearsals of Defying Gravity. After hearing her, he publicly admitted that this young woman delivered one of the most solid performances he had seen in any international staging of the show.
In 2017, the actress's career seemed stuck in daytime soap operas aimed at the Hispanic market in the United States, such as La Doña. Her chance at Elite came through a direct message that ended up lost in her spam folder. By the time she found the notification, the deadline to submit her audition was that very night.
With no time to set up a proper stage or lighting, she filmed the scene in her living room on her phone with a glass of wine. Three days later she landed at Barajas Airport with a signed contract to play Lucrecia Montesinos for three seasons.
That shattered her anonymity in Europe.
The series created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona premiered in autumn 2018 and gathered more than twenty million views in its first four weeks. The character of Lucrecia offered a mix of raw classism, devastating comebacks and a vulnerability that dominated social media. But the Madrid shoot demanded a suffocating physical discipline that clashed head-on with her musical ambitions.
During breaks in filming between 2018 and 2019, she wrote songs in her dressing room with producer Saak. Tracks such as Mala fama and Oye Pablo came out of those late-night sessions, synth-pop productions that blew up digital streaming counters. Shooting twelve hours a day and then locking herself in sound studios downtown in Madrid at night was an unsustainable routine.
In 2020, she announced she would not renew her contract for the series' fourth season, giving up the most-watched fiction on the platform to avoid being typecast. Several industry executives did not understand her voluntary exit from such an international showcase. But the artist chose to focus on her album K.O., released in early 2021 after a pirated leak forced her to move the premiere up by twenty-four hours.
The risk was enormous.
In April 2024, she made a definitive break from her earlier career by dropping her plain artistic name and releasing the album Childstar as Danna. The record set aside easy-listening pop to dive into dark electronic melodies and industrial rhythms. The campaign included co-directing the documentary short Danna: Tenemos que hablar, which premiered on Disney+ at the end of that same year, alongside filmmakers Diego Álvarez and Aarón Snaiderman.
That same 2024, director Jon M. Chu chose her to provide the sung and dubbed voice of Elphaba in the film premiere of Wicked, bringing together the theatrical leap of her youth with the international big screen. It was meticulous dubbing work in which she adapted her vocal range to the role played on screen by Cynthia Erivo.
Between tours and studio recordings, the singer manages her own master recordings through the One Percent Records label. In May 2026, she presented the documentary series Visions, a technical production focused on breaking down the stage design, microphone setup and logistical costs of her latest tour across large venues.
