Danny Lloyd arrived on the set of The Shining without ever having seen a horror movie in his life. Stanley Kubrick picked him from five thousand hopefuls after watching a recorded audition in which the little boy showed a level of concentration unusual for his five years. The director decided to protect him throughout the entire shoot in 1979 to avoid unnecessary trauma.
Lloyd believed he was filming a drama about a family living in an empty hotel. He never saw the blood coming out of the elevator, nor did he run into the twins in the hallways during the actual takes. Kubrick created a bubble of total normalcy so the boy could play while the rest of the crew worked in an atmosphere of constant tension.
He was just a kid with a tricycle.
That natural quality was precisely what gave his performance its authenticity. But film wasn't a priority for him. After the film's release in 1980, he tried to follow the path of child actors without much enthusiasm.
In 1982, he appeared in the TV movie Will: G. Gordon Liddy, playing a young Liddy. It was his last credited appearance in decades. He found the casting process tedious, and the offers that came in failed to spark his interest in the Los Angeles film industry. So he decided to return home to Illinois and be a normal teenager.
Fame didn't weigh on him because no one recognized him on the street. By the age of fourteen, he had already decided that his future lay far from the cameras and the spotlight. His parents supported the decision without outside pressure. For the Lloyd family, film was a curious one-year episode, not a way of life.
He chose science books over screenplays.
He spent his youth out of the spotlight and avoided the self-destructive spirals common among other child actors of his generation. Instead of chasing magazine covers, he focused on his university studies. His goal was a stability that Hollywood studios could not guarantee him in the long run.
The change of direction led to a solid academic career. Lloyd became a biology professor at a community college in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He has spent years teaching students who, for the most part, have no idea that their professor starred in one of the key pieces of genre cinema.
In 2019, he broke his retirement for a brief cameo in Doctor Sleep. Director Mike Flanagan convinced him to appear as a spectator at a baseball game. It was a gesture of respect for the legacy of the original story. Danny Lloyd was paid a minimum fee for that appearance and returned to his biology classes the next day.
He lives on a farm with his wife and their four children.
He occasionally accepts invitations to film festivals, but always on his own privacy terms. In 2024, his name remains tied to public teaching in the Kentucky school system. His original 1979 contract stipulated a salary of 1,250 dollars per week of filming.
