Dave Callaham sold his first screenplay in 2003. He was in his early twenties, and the script was titled Horsemen. It ended up becoming a horror film with Dennis Quaid, but the road to its release was a minefield of rewrites and delays.
In 2005, he signed on to adapt Doom for the big screen. Critics were merciless about the result. But Callaham achieved something few manage in Hollywood: major studios trusted him to handle massive budgets despite the early setbacks.
The film business doesn't forgive a lack of pacing.
His big break came when Sylvester Stallone read a script of his titled Barrow in 2008. Stallone was looking for a story about mercenaries that smelled of old gunpowder and redemption. That meeting gave birth to the The Expendables franchise. Callaham is credited as creator of the characters and co-writer of the original story for the 2010 film.
That success gave him access to the most valuable intellectual properties in the world. In 2014 he worked on the reboot of Godzilla under director Gareth Edwards. His job was to give a serious tone to a monster that had been a rubber toy for decades. The film grossed 524 million dollars worldwide.
The screenwriter specialized in fixing complex problems in massive productions. In 2020 he took part in the script for Wonder Woman 1984. The industry already saw him as a writer capable of handling superhero tone without losing the classic three-act structure.
Writing action requires knowing the weight of a punch.
Because Callaham doesn't just write about fights. He holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and that physical experience shows in his scripts. In 2021 he signed on to write Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios. The script blended mystical martial arts with a family drama that avoided the clichés of its genre.
In 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hit theaters. The script, co-written with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, posed a major technical challenge because of the number of characters and alternate realities that had to coexist. Callaham had to fit together the pieces of a narrative puzzle that many producers considered impossible to execute coherently.
And the gamble paid off.
But Callaham's work doesn't stop at animation. In 2024, production on the third installment of Sony's Spider-Man saga faced delays in the release schedule due to post-production adjustments. That same year his name was linked to the live-action project Hercules for Disney, produced by the Russo brothers. The contract for this latter film was closed with an estimated budget above 150 million dollars.
