In May 2017, David Beckham appeared on screen with rotten teeth, fake scars and a nose prosthetic. He played Trigger in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword under the direction of Guy Ritchie. The British press took less than twenty-four hours to tear his performance apart, calling it clumsy and totally lacking in dramatic nuance.
That public humiliation put any doubts to rest.
But the acting failure never slowed his drive to conquer the audiovisual industry. Before stepping in front of the camera as a star cameo, he had already appeared in the Goal! trilogy between 2005 and 2007, playing himself. Soon he discovered that playing fictional characters was not his natural territory.
In 2015, he made his film debut with a silent cameo of barely thirty seconds in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., playing a Soviet projectionist. It worked as an inside joke among friends with no major impact. But two years later, Guy Ritchie gave him a handful of spoken lines in a blockbuster that cost 175 million dollars, and its global box office collapsed spectacularly.
Critics destroyed his credibility as an actor before he could rebuild it. So Beckham immediately shelved the scripts and put the period costumes away in a drawer. He understood a basic Hollywood rule that many sports stars ignore: pure celebrity sells tickets, but it doesn't teach you how to act.
In 2019, he founded the production company Studio 99 in London with one firm idea. He didn't want to wait for other directors to call him to shoot; he wanted to control every second of footage that carried his name. The company's name paid tribute to the year of his treble with Manchester United and to his wedding to Victoria Adams.
In 2022, he signed with Disney+ for the documentary series Save Our Squad with David Beckham, returning to the roots of grassroots football in East London. He turned his attention to the muddy pitches of youth leagues and mentored players without relying on someone else's script. And streaming platforms discovered that his natural presence still kept the scoring touch of old.
The real masterstroke came a year later.
In 2023, he premiered the documentary miniseries Beckham on Netflix, directed by Oscar winner Fisher Stevens. The deal with the streamer was worth 16 million British pounds to open up his family archives and submit to a candid, no-holds-barred interrogation. Stevens insisted on no prior censorship of the toughest moments of his sporting career or the turbulence in his marriage.
The result dominated global audiences for weeks and won technical Emmy Awards for its rhythmic editing. But beyond the trophies, the production showed that his real talent in front of the lens lay in rationing his own intimacy with surgical precision.
In 2023, he brought his company into the Authentic Studios conglomerate to develop projects beyond his own personal image. He financed the feature-length documentary Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything in 2023, about the legendary snooker master, with John Battsek as co-producer. And in 2024, he produced the documentary series World War Shoe for Disney+, focused on the fierce rivalry between the founders of Adidas and Puma.
Studio 99 closed 2024 with four formats sold to international networks and a catalog of sixty hours of in-house production.
The headquarters of his British branch operate with two permanent digital color grading suites and distribution contracts locked in until 2028.
