In 2008, David Broncano made their first appearance on a comedy stage in Madrid after sending a homemade recording to Paramount Comedy. They had left a computer science degree and a poorly paid job at an advertising agency to try their luck with ten-minute sets in half-empty rooms.

He grew up in Orcera, a village in the Segura mountains with fewer than two thousand residents, and that distance from the cultural circuits of the capital shaped his approach to comedy. His early routines showed no reverence for traditional television and no respect for the conventions of variety shows.

And that disconnect was his greatest advantage.

He started as a minor contributor to Estas no son las noticias on Cuatro and went on to take part in several short-lived projects that audiences barely remember. In 2014, Cadena SER gave him the late-night slot with La Vida Moderna, alongside Héctor de Miguel and Ignatius Farray, a radio show with no fixed rundown where absurdity and anarchy replaced the usual political news routine.

From Pay-TV Midnight Slot to Format Control

His decisive breakthrough came when Andreu Buenafuente brought him on as a recurring contributor to Late Motiv on the Movistar+ platform. Broncano did not write jokes with classic punchlines; instead, he exploited awkward silences and the technical mishaps of live TV, a dynamic that led the private channel to offer him his own late-night show in February 2018.

That is how La Resistencia was born from the audience seats of the Teatro Arlequín on Madrid's Gran Vía. Celebrity guests would show up unprepared for direct questions about the money in their bank accounts or how many times they had sex in the last month. The show gathered over a billion views across digital platforms in its first years, disrupting the pay-TV model by relying heavily on fragmented consumption online.

Nobody in the industry anticipated such a digital impact.

But the most decisive professional move happened away from the cameras, in the company registry. In 2021, Broncano founded the company Encofrados Encofrasa with partners Ricardo Castella and Jorge Ponce to take on co-production of the show, split equally with El Terrat. The host went from being a talent hired by the hour to holding the executive ownership of his own product.

The Front Line of Public Television

In April 2024, RTVE's Board of Directors approved the team's move into the slot ahead of prime time on La 1. The operation caused an internal upheaval at the state corporation that led to executive dismissals and weeks of parliamentary debate.

The initial contract committed 28 million euros for two full seasons, with a schedule of 160 episodes per year and an approximate cost of 87,975 euros per episode.

The format hit the screen in September 2024 under the name La Revuelta, keeping the Teatro Príncipe Gran Vía as its base of operations and retaining the same lineup of comedians and crew. In its first months on air, it averaged audience shares above 15%, battling head to head for the late-night lead against the private channels.

The media pulse shifted to the bottom lines of the companies' earnings reports.

At the beginning of 2026, the public broadcaster agreed to an early renewal of the contract through the end of 2028, raising the total figure to 31.5 million euros for 320 additional episodes. The deal set a budget of 98,600 euros per show for daily episodes recorded as live-to-tape, with a staff of sixty workers and a timed running length of seventy-five minutes per night.
