Adriana Ugarte didn't end up in film by accident. Her grandfather was Eduardo Ugarte, a close collaborator of Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca during the Republic years. But bloodlines don't guarantee a gaze behind the camera.
In 2006, she earned her first Goya nomination for Best Revelation Actress for Cabeza de perro. She was twenty-one and had an innate ability to hold the frame without blinking. That shoot alongside Juan José Ballesta defined a way of working built on restraint.
And the gamble paid off.
Before turning twenty-five, she was already a familiar face in Spanish homes thanks to the series La Señora. The show reached screen shares of over 20%, and forced the actress to manage a fame she never quite enjoyed. Ugarte has always preferred philosophy books to red carpet events.
Spanish television changed pace in 2013 with the premiere of The Time in Between. Ugarte played Sira Quiroga, and the audience came close to five million viewers for the final episode. It was a mass phenomenon that went beyond the screen.
But she chose to take refuge in her studies at UNED while the press chased her down the street. She wasn't after easy applause.
In 2016, she received a call from Pedro Almodóvar to star in Julieta. The director from La Mancha asked her to strip away any trace of her usual expressiveness to build a dry, broken character.
She banned crying during the most dramatic scenes.
The result was a sharp performance that took her to the Cannes Film Festival. That experience marked her move into a professional maturity where silences say more than screams. In 2018, she shot Durante la tormenta under the direction of Oriol Paulo. The film became a massive hit in China, grossing more than eleven million dollars in that Asian market.
The streaming industry found in her face the perfect draw for film noir. In 2019, she starred in Hache, a Netflix production set in 1960s Barcelona. She learned to handle period firearms and shot in gritty settings like docks and nightclubs.
And the physical effort became a constant.
In 2023, she premiered Lobo Feroz and appeared in the series Parot, exploring much darker and more draining characters. She was no longer the naive young woman of her early days, but a woman capable of carrying the weight of complex police plots.
In 2024, she appeared in ¿Es el enemigo? La película de Gila, playing the comedian's wife during the war years. Filming on her next international project wrapped in November 2025 on a budget of four million euros.
