In the fall of 2001, David Bustamante climbed down from construction scaffolding in Cantabria and stepped onto a TV set where nobody was quite sure how it would work. He was nineteen years old. That first season of the musical competition Operación Triunfo ended its run in February 2002 with a audience share of more than seventy percent.
The Spanish record industry of the time operated on aggressive, fast-consumption dynamics. His first solo studio album, titled Bustamante and produced by Miguel Gallardo in the spring of 2002, sold half a million copies in just three days.
And that was only the beginning of the commercial whirlwind.
Over the following decade, he released bestselling albums such as Así soy yo and Al filo de la irrealidad, mixing Latin-style ballads with tours of more than seventy dates a year. Concert halls were packed nonstop, but the dynamics of the music business began to shift with the arrival of digital streaming platforms.
Between the spotlights of massive tours and the covers of celebrity gossip magazines, there was barely any room left for music. The tabloid press's coverage of his marriage and subsequent divorce often overshadowed his record releases in mainstream media.
Because TV fame often comes with a steep price when your personal life spills into your songs. In 2019, he released Héroes en tiempos de guerra, an album that struggled to find a spot on charts dominated by urban productions. Traditional sales dropped sharply across the entire industry.
So he had to completely rethink his career strategy outside the usual recording studios.
There was no safety net at that point.
In September 2021, the singer agreed to take on the role of Sam Wheat in the stage production of Ghost, the Musical at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía in Madrid. Some theater critics received the news with skepticism because of his TV background.
But the Cantabrian completed more than two hundred and fifty live performances alternating the lead role with actor Ricky Merino. That production required holding notes in demanding ranges while performing illusion tricks and mechanical movements in front of the audience.
And the move paid off at the box office.
After that stage on Gran Vía, he decided to take control of the songwriting side of his music career. In October 2024, he released Inédito, produced by Pablo Cebrián, taking on full songwriting credit for the lyrics and music of every track on the album for the first time.
In 2026, he signed on as the lead actor in the stage production of El Zorro, the Musical at the Teatro La Latina in Madrid, with a score by John Cameron and Gipsy Kings songs adapted for live performance. The production set a schedule of four two-hour shows a week that required stage combat with real swords, acrobatic falls, and a twelve-piece band in the orchestra pit.
