Paula Echevarría arrived in Madrid after a stay in London that had little to do with the spotlight. In 2000, she landed her first episodic roles in youth series such as Al salir de clase and Compañeros. These were brief appearances that helped pay the bills while she searched for a real opportunity in Spanish fiction.
But her face started to become familiar to the general public in 2003. That was when she joined the cast of El Comisario to play Officer Clara Osma. She stayed on the Telecinco series until 2007, and there she learned the craft of daily shoots with their frantic pace.
And the gamble paid off.
Before ending her time at the most famous police station on television, she caught the attention of José Luis Garci. The Madrid-born director chose her to star in Luz de domingo in 2007. It was a risky move, as it meant going from television to auteur cinema with an Oscar winner. Garci worked with her again a year later in Sangre de mayo, a superproduction with a budget of 15 million euros to commemorate the bicentennial of the Peninsular War.
In 2010, she returned to television with Gran Reserva. The Televisión Española series blended family intrigue and the wine business in La Rioja. She played Lucía Reverte over three seasons and 42 episodes. The project required a restrained dramatic style, different from her previous work in period films.
But the massive phenomenon arrived in 2014 with Velvet. The love story between a seamstress and the heir to a fashion gallery chain captivated audiences for four years. The series reached peaks of more than four million viewers in its live-broadcast finale in December 2016. The advertising industry then realized her image sold far beyond the scripts.
It was the end of an era on free-to-air television.
Following that success, her career diversified dramatically. In 2017, she signed an exclusive contract with Mediaset España to develop fiction and film projects. She then starred in the war miniseries Los nuestros 2 in 2019 and took part in the comedy Ola de crímenes under the direction of Gracia Querejeta.
Many critics overlook the fact that her social media presence didn't happen by chance. In 2010, she began writing a fashion blog for a women's magazine, which ended up turning her into a walking advertising billboard. She managed her personal brand with surgical precision while Spanish cinema typecast her in strong-woman or romantic-heroine roles.
The reality of the industry in Spain is tough for actresses over forty. Echevarría chose not to wait for directors' calls and diversified her income with perfume lines and partnerships with mass-market brands. In 2019, she starred in the film Si yo fuera rico, which grossed more than 12 million euros at the domestic box office.
The pace of her filming slowed down.
In 2022, she joined the entertainment show Got Talent España as a judge for its eighth season. This move confirmed the shift of her professional profile from pure acting to big-format television entertainment. In 2023, she renewed her participation in the same talent competition for the ninth season.
