Marta Hazas had a backup plan in case acting didn't work out. She earned a degree in Journalism before stepping onto a professional film set. But journalism was shelved once she joined Cristina Rota's acting school in the early 2000s.
Her first jobs were brief roles in series such as El comisario and Hospital Central. They were one-day appearances that helped her understand how a production works from the inside. She didn't take the easy route, choosing instead to learn the craft from the technical ground up.
Madrid doesn't give anything away.
In 2007, she landed a role in the cast of El Internado. She played Amelia Ugarte over several seasons, and that exposure gave her the visibility she needed to move on to projects with more dramatic weight. It was her first real encounter with fan culture in Spain.
But daily television was her real school of survival. In 2011, she took on the challenge of starring in Bandolera and recorded more than 500 episodes in just two years. Keeping up that filming pace demands a discipline that few actors maintain over the long term without burning out.
The arrival of Velvet in 2014 marked a shift in her international profile. Her role as Clara Montesinos worked so well that the character later moved into Velvet Colección in 2017. It was a period of period costumes and luxurious sets that lasted nearly six years in total.
And the gamble paid off.
Hazas decided she didn't want to depend solely on calls from casting directors. In 2018, she founded the production company Azafrán Producciones with Javier Veiga. The first major result of this business venture was Pequeñas coincidencias, the first original Spanish series made for a global streaming platform.
Because in this industry, creative control is the greatest privilege possible. Controlling schedules and scripts allowed her to explore a much sharper comedic side than audiences were used to seeing in her earlier work.
In 2022, she took part in the series Días mejores, playing a doctor going through a complicated grieving process. It was a raw, understated performance, far from the brightness of her more popular roles. Filming took place in Madrid under the direction of Alejo Flah, with a script focused on mental health.
In 2023, she premiered the film Amigos hasta la muerte, a project that also came out of her own production company. The movie was shot mainly on location in Galicia and was a significant financial effort for her company.
For 2024, she focused her efforts on filming Hotel Mala suerte in northern Spain. The production wrapped post-production with a technical crew of more than sixty people and a distribution plan centered on commercial theaters before its arrival on digital platforms.
